Pruni, I think the lack of drying out from a tampon causes the rest. Is my only explanation.

Overrun - the leakage - how full is the mooncup when you are getting leaks? Had the AF day of hell last week and it was full hourly throughout the day (I am NOT joking, thought I was going end up in A & E.) I find that I am aware of the leakage beginning (rather like when only wearing a pad, aware of the seeping sensation) and if I go to the loo right away then I am able to empty it before the inevitable flood. When the mooncup is full, it will leak through the little pinholes near the top.

Bozza · 11/09/2006 21:15

Me too. I have about 6 tampons in a drawer somewhere but can't even imagine inserting them.

longwaytogo · 11/09/2006 21:40

mmm I always leak out of mine and don't know why either. It's never full, I know the suction is good so why? Is it because I have a prolapse? Is my cervix too low so the mooncup sits too low? I don't know. Haven't used mine for a few months again eithr as I always end up with terrible thrush. Now is that coincidence or is it the mooncup? So many questions, not many answers

pesme · 11/09/2006 21:46

dh pointed this thread out me! i definitely ahve less pain with the old mooncup. more flexible ([nails down a blackboard] emoticon at leaching effect with tampons)

Yep - less pain (barely any in fact) and shorter periods here too.

I had minor leaks first 3 mths but none at all last time. Clenching the old pelvic floor muscles seems to give a good seal.

BonyM · 11/09/2006 21:54

What a good idea Pruni - I have loads of tampons that I didn't know what to do with (seems so wasteful to just bin them). I'll take them with me next time I go to see dh at work (he works at the local Uni.) and leave them in the loo.

Overrun · 12/09/2006 08:22

Well thinking about it, it could be that it is slightly too low, I do worry abit about having to do a major fishing expedition it does say on the leaflet that is shouldn't be too high up.
I think some of the time its full (v heavy periods too ) so may be coming out of the holes at the top.
I find that I notice the feeling and can sort myself out without there being a major flood, except at night so often wear a precautionary towel.
One last thing, I have to ask, and it is probably tmi, but does anyone else nearly push it out when they are having a crap?
Does this mean that my pelvic floor muscles are good or not? Either way its a slight problem

CheesyFeet · 12/09/2006 09:08

My personal theory is that the absorbancy of pads/tampons actually draws the blood out through the cervix faster than it would come out naturally (a kind of capillary effect I suppose) causing excessive cramping. With a mooncup, it comes out in its own time and at its own pace.

I'm a recent mooncup convert - no going back for me.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2006 09:09

I've got no pains AND lighter periods. Woohoo!

asur · 12/09/2006 09:25

just felt I had to share this... I said something to DH about it getting easier to put in/take out each time I do it... He looked totally confused and asked why I took it out. He thought there was a valve in it and that was what the stem was for - he thought it just got left in there for a week and I just needed to squeeze the valve to empty it every so often

Bozza · 12/09/2006 09:39

overrun - yes that pushing out effect does happen to me. I tend to think that suggests lack of a good seal as well as pelvic floor issues.

Overrun · 12/09/2006 11:41

Thanks Bozza, you might be right about the pushing being lack of good seal, but it doesn't actually come out, just slips down a bit

Bozza · 12/09/2006 11:44

Have to admit to having had to catch mine.

Overrun · 12/09/2006 11:47

LOL Bozza, thats my worry , hasn't happened yet but it would be too awful if it fell in.
Do you think it is our pelvic floors then, might it not mean they are quite strong to be able to do that, are should one set of muscles be able to work independently of the other ones?

Bozza · 12/09/2006 11:51

I think there are quite a few factors involved really. So not altogether sure what the final answer is.

suzywong · 12/09/2006 11:54

hellfire I forgot to boil mine at the end of last month!

longwaytogo · 12/09/2006 13:33

Yep I nearly push mine out every time I do the other, but thats how I know the seal is ok because it never falls out just hangs out sorry tmi. I know my pelvic floor muscles are rubbish and thats what I put it down to.

CarolinaMoon · 12/09/2006 13:33

Pruni, I've got a box of now-redundant tampons and my sister lives in Oxford. Should I just leave them at the porter's lodge at Balliol next time I visit my sis?

Overrun · 12/09/2006 13:55

longwaytogo, thats what happens with me, I see what you mean about the seal
I have always thought I have good pelvic floor muscles, oh well
