I have banged my front tooth and I'm terrified, any dentists about?

I'm so scared that it is going to fall out and I'll need a false one. I banged it late last night.

I have been to the dentist and he has said he really doesn't think it will fall out, bit there is no way of being 100% sure at this stage. He X rayed it and said it is very slightly wobbly but has not moved from the position it was in before. It has taken a banging and it will be a few weeks before it is back to normal and doesn't hurt any longer. He said that the worst he thinks could happen is the nerve may die over time and I will need a root canal.I can cope with that.

I am terrified in case the worst case scenario happens and I need a false front tooth-because I cannot see how it will look natural and normal! I dread having a big metal root showing at the top of my tooth or a gap in my gum where it fits.

Can anybody reassure me, is it possible to have a decent false front tooth that looks good?

I always thought my smile was my best feature, it won't be if I have to have a nasty looking false tooth :(

I should have said dentists or anybody knowledgeable about this-or anybody with a nice looking false front tooth!
He did reassure me that he thinks it will be okay. I will feel much better if it stops hurting :(

Good friend of mine has 2 excellent implants at the front. You really can't tell which ones are the implants.

But it does sound like you're jumping the gun a little Smile

I had root canal in front tooth and just got tooth whitened ..no crown needed.

sunflower49 · 08/07/2014 13:16

Thank you so much for your reply! That's really good to know. I kind of don't understand how they work, I mean how they fit the implant to your gum without it looking obvious.

I am anal about looking after my teeth and I hope you're right and I'm jumping the gun! The dentist said 'It's definitely not going to fall out' and kind of laughed at me (in a nice way!) but then he also said there's no way of being 100% sure and to keep an eye on any colour changes etc and he did say it was very slightly wobbly.

It's still painful and I feel an absolute idiot for letting it happen (I fell over in the front room and banged my head on the stone fireplace), when I care for my teeth so much in other ways!

About 5 years ago. Tooth went grey but dentist just put bleach inside it to lighten it (not painful after root treatment) to match first one. No crown needed.

I also work for a dentist. A crown is not inevitable even if tooth discolours :)

sunflower49 · 08/07/2014 18:30

Thank you fanjo and does it look normal now? I am reassured by your reply.

It hasn't discolored, It's still hurting though. I'm still scared and just want it to be back to normal, I am feeling okay now that if I do need a false one at least it won't look it-I just have seen some people with false front teeth and they have a bit grey/silver bit at the root and I really don't want that-but I have also called my friend who said one of hers is false and have I ever noticed (nope)!

The dentist said It's had a bump and will take a couple of weeks to be fully normal-but the Xray looked fine. I'm scared of cleaning my teeth in case I hurt it, looks like I'm living on soup for a few days too.

My friend had to have a false front tooth last year. She told me about it months later. I'd seen her several times and not noticed. Even when I knew nad had had a really good peer, I really, really couldn't tell - it was perfectly matched to her other teeth and looks completely natural. Hopefully it won't come to that for you but if it does, it won't look false or unnatural.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/07/2014 19:21

Yes it looks fine

Standinginline · 08/07/2014 19:33

I think I read somewhere that with the front teeth they don't let the black line show that shows at top of crowns. The back ones they leave it as it protects the tooth underneath (something to do with plaque not building up on the black part ).

sunflower49 · 08/07/2014 19:57

Thank you, spider and fanjo. I must have just seen some really bad ones then, standing!

I always think worst case scenario.
The dentist really didn't seem to think it would fall out and he showed me the X ray and it looked fine,he didn't think it would fall out. I just want to go to sleep for a week until this painful bit is over!

Dentists usually give worst case scenario so be reassured.

sunflower49 · 08/07/2014 22:19

Thank you Fanjo.
I have had a nap and woken up and it isn't hurting as much, now. I have a trip to Manchester planned for my birthday with my Mum, Niece and Sister and I am a bit growly about probably not enjoying it as much as I could if I wasn't worrying about this.

Hi, do you have an update on your teeth? Did it die or did it turn out okay? I managed to fall over and hit my front teeth on a stair 5 days ago and rushed to the dentist too as I've always had brilliant teeth. She did an xray and said everything looked fine, but i managed to cause some hairline fractures, which apparently don't need any work on. They aren't loose and are barely hurting, just a dull ache but now im TERRIFIED they are going to blacken and die :( Honestly i'm struggling to sleep at night because my teeth are the only thing i've ever been 100% happy with
