Hep A and B vaccinations - Northern California

Have already posted under Children's Health but then spotted vaccinations! Have recently moved from the UK to Northern California. We have 2 children aged 14 and 8 years old. The vaccination schedule for children is similar here except vaccinations for Hep B and A are given. The High School have said that only Hep B is compulsory. Our new Doctor has highly recommended both Hep A and B. Does anyone understand the schedule here? They will def have Hep B but whether or not Hep A is necessary seems a bit vague. They are older but I still don't like to overvaccinate.
