"Drink plenty of fluids" - is plain water ok?!

Probably a daft question but I must have had at least 6 litres of the stuff today and still feel thirsty. Does it need to have something in it? Have also had a coffee, a glass of Dr Pepper and a milkshake.

The above advice was given by the consultant I saw yesterday along with regular pain meds and rest after I was diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Am I going to drown from the inside if I continue to drink that much?!

if it's mineral or tap water it should be fine, but maybe have some oxo in between water to balance you minerals.

but actually, I would call nhs direct, thirsty is one thing, but that thirsty is another level.

Tap water yes. Do you mean dissolve an oxo cube in water and drink?

I think my body might be just making up for the days when I couldn't lift my head off the pillow long enough to drink. Feeling less thirsty this morning, wee is a normal colour now if that's not tmi!
