Bleeding after Caesarean - Smell ? Advice needed...

Hi ladies, I had an emergency c-section with my baby boy a couple of weeks ago (16 days to be precise). I still have a little bleeding but by no means heavy. I am a bit concerned because I have noticed the last couple of days that my blood has a very unpleasant odour. It's sort of a very strong off meat type of smell and is quite unpleasant. I had a vaginal birth with dd and don't remember this. Does anyone know why this is or do you think I have an infection ? I am thinking I probably do have an infection. I have made an appointment to see the nurse at my docs tomorrow morning so they can take a swab but will have to wait for the results and am worried about how quickly I need to treat this if it is an infection. Any advice gratefully received.

I think they may just give you antibiotics as a precaution anyway. But i remember I bled for nearly 6 weeks after my sections, which apparently longer than after a VB. Mine smelt sweet (? thats the only way I can describe it)

Hi Tillysmummy .... congrats on the birth of your ds
16 days after my c/s my bleeding got suddenly heavier ... when I told my midwife she rushed me to hospital to have a scan and they found 'retained products' ... they kept me overnight and gave me antibiotics ... they wasted no time whatsoever which surprised me as I had no fever and the bleeding did not smell bad at all. The reason they wasted no time despite there being no signs of infection was because they told me that infection can come on very quickly.
If you feel unwell in the night I think you must call out the doctor ... don't wait until the morning ...
Let us know how you are ...
Hugs ....

Sorry, that sounds a bit scary ... didn't mean it to be ... but I think that if the blood loss smells like you say then it sounds to me that you might have an infection ...
How are you feeling otherwise ... do you feel fluey or anything?

Tillysmummy · 25/03/2004 20:14

Hi Ghosty no I don't feel fluey don't really feel anything at all. Just normal. Apart from the odd soreness in the tummy area but not sure how much of that is psychosematic (spelling ??!!) will keep an eye though and if I feel unwell in the middle of the night will def call doc or go to the hospital. It's been smelling for a couple of days now. It's certainly not a sweet smell fio2, quite a horrid smell actually.

Are you wearing Always towls by anychance? I have found that they 'smell'. Best to get it checked out though with a swab. As you are feelink OK it would be alright to wait for swab result probably.
