I have an underactive thyroid and have recently had a blood test and been increased to 125 from 100. i went to dr's a couple of days ago because I've been getting terrible pmt and generally feeling down. It wasn't my normal dr and she said ok, first we need to find out if you have a thyroid problem, so I said well I do - oh yes she said, well your new dose hasn't kicked inyet, so that may be why you're feeling down. I asked what my last level was (never been told before) and she said 8.something adn that it should be below 5.
Ok, but she then went on to talk about anti depressants and off I went with a prescription, which I got from the chemist. When I read the side effects it said that you may be suiscidal (sp) etc and feel sick for a couple of weeks. Dr did mention would be a bit crap for a week or two and that I would have to take for 6 months.
Now I'm wondering if she's been a bit to hasty in giving me the AD's. As her first thought was thyroid and I do have a thyroid problem, wouldn't it be better to get that regulated before committing to AD's for six months and going through two weeks of feeling terrible?
I feel very confused. I am low and it would be great to get it sorted out, but I feel that she's jumped the gun a bit. We have private medical insurance through DH's work so could ask to be referered to whatever kind of specialist deals with thyroid. What do you think?
