Bladder/kidney infection - how long for antibiotics to work?

I have had a uti for a week. After home remedies failed I started some Anti b's on Tuesday. By Weds morning I felt so bad I went back to GP (but different Dr) as I wasn't sure if it was the uti or a reaction to the anti bs. GP said she thought infection could have travelled up towards my kidneys and changed my anti bs. It has now been 48 hours and I am no better. Would you give it more time for the drugs to kick in or go back again? I don't want to be a nuisance but I'm just worried with the Bank Holiday weekend looming.

If it's gone onto your kidneys then it can take about a week before you feel better.

Took me three days to feel human plus two drips (not sure what was in them!)

Then a further 9 days of antibiotics to be fully over it.

Hope you feel better soon.

I had a severe upper UTI after having my DS, it had been there at least a week when I realised. I had antibiotics for a week in hospital and then a further course for a month afterwards. I was actually on 2 types of antibiotics, they let me go home once they started working which was about 4 days, maybe 5. It was a good week after that they I felt slightly better and about 2 months before symptoms were gone completely. I'd give the tablets time to work but I didn't actually feel worse - if you feel worse then you have to go back to the dr even if it's just a check up. They'd rather you go back in than return in a few days having developed complications. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone. I had a phone appointment with yet another GP from our practice last night. He said that the reason my symptoms were not improving is because in most cases, uti bugs are resistant to any penicillin based antibiotic and that I should change straight away. He recommended Ciprofloxacin which I started this morning. I am a bit scared of the potential side effects but the pharmacist has reassured me a little. Any experiences of Ciprofloxacin?

P.S. I was on Co-Amoxiclav.
