I have just woken up as the back of my head, near the nape of my neck is severely itchy and I have discovered a big lump, just bigger than a 50p pieceSad

What could this be?
I have so many scary thoughts as to what it could be, please reassure me before I visit doctors.
Very worried

Could be a bite?

Sounds very much like a bite, there are some vicious buggers around at the moment. Have you got any anti-histamines in the house?

Thanks guys no I don't have any antihistamines. I truly hope it is a bite.
My dh will be home from work soon, going to get him to have a look and if it doesn't look like a bite I'm going to visit gp asap x

The fact that it came up suddenly and is itchy points to a bite, serious lumps don't usually come up overnight and itch. I would get your DH to pick up some cheap anti histamines from a corner shop/supermarket on his way home and try those before panicking.

He says he can't see anything but can feel a huge lump. Going to grab some antihistamines on way home from school run.
He did find a bee or wasp dead In the kitchen so could be a sting from that.

Put some vinegar on it, that should reduce the itch until you can get some antihistamine

There are glands low down at the back of the head. They can come up because of low grade infection (like a sore throat or earache) or because of something like nits (sorry!). Is the lump itchy or below it?

pumpkinsweetie · 07/05/2014 12:10

The lump is itchy, it has gone down a bit but it's still there. I catch nits from my children a lot, as 4 of them are in school they are a regular thing but never had a reaction such as this if it is that.
