Hi,

I'm iron deficient, and my GP has prescribed ferrous fumarate tablets. What can I eat/drink to improve my iron levels?

Red meat is a good source of iron. Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron, so make sure you eat plenty of fruit and veg too.

I think you are meant to avoid taking the iron with tea - it prevents absorption. Need vitamin C & I think iron from veg sources isn't v good in spite of Popeye & his spinach.

Take a vitamin C (ascorbic acid) tablet at the same time as your Ferrous Fumarate, this aids absorption of the iron.

Red meat, liver if you like it, dark green vegetables, baked beans (pulses generally, I think).

Vitamin C helps absorption, and Caffeine reduces absorption, so have fruit juice instead of tea or coffee with meals
