I think I have some sort of prolapse 'down there', help!

As title says, I think I have some sort of prolapse. I had a bit of difficulty inserting a tampon yesterday but didn't think much of it. When I went to remove it (sorry if TMI) I noticed a sort of lump that wasn't there before, or it may have been but I didn't notice. When I press it it moves back/up quite a lot.

So I have got a mirror and had a look and googled it, and am pretty sure it's some sort of prolapse. I can't get to to GP until next wed at the earliest. Can anyone put my mind at rest? I'm 38 with 2 dc's, the youngest has just turned 4.

Has anyone experienced this? What will happen next? I split up with DP just before Xmas so haven't had sex since then, am worried about that side of it too, especially with someone new (not that there is likely to be anyone new for a long time)

When you see your gp he/she should be able to let you know what can be done. If it is a prolapse it will depend on the severity as to what can be recommended. You may need minor surgery or it may be helped by little cone things (can't remember at top of head the exact name) that you insert into your vagina to help strengthen things.

Please do not get too worried, easier said than done I know.

It sounds like it could very well be a prolapse. Do you have any other symptoms? Pain? Problems with wee or bowel movements?

Although you will doubtless be referred to physio first, or just told to be more thorough with pelvic floor exercises, physio is extremely unlikely to fix it, although it may make things feel a bit better in the short term. Surgery is really going to be the only way to fix this. However, if it's not that severe a prolapse and is therefore quite safe to leave without risk of it getting much worse, and it's not really causing you any problems, you don't have to have anything done about it at all if you don;t want to.

I quite understand your worries about sex. When you are lying down, most prolapses tend to subside and be much less noticeable. So when you are in that position, your partner wouldn't necessarily notice it. As for DTD itself, again when you are lying down it is easier.

Good idea to see your GP and find out what your options are. You may well be told to do PFEs for 6-12 weeks before they will consider referring you to a specialist gynae, so if you want to bypass that agonising waiting stage, say you have been doing PFEs for 12 weeks when you have your appointment. (Whilst you are waiting for your appointment, you can always start them and see how you get on.)

I'm really sorry. I have had the grand total of 5 separate prolapses amongst other childbirth injuries. It sucks and is a big shock when you make that discovery.

Well spotted Footle. Yes, unfortunately prolapse and pelvic floor repair surgery is not minor.

Ah I come from family of medical professionals so in my head anything short of brain/heart etc surgery is minor , my apologies.

I was basically trying to convey that for most women it is a fairly standard and straight forward procedure, iykwim.
A friend had it done via a epidural so she did not have to have a general and once her body recovered she was able to resume her sex life. She said she felt liberated as for the prior 3 years (birth of her dc) she had been in terrible pain during penetrative sex (so she had to stop).

Obviously recovery time and lots of tlc is needed and as with any surgery/medical procedure sometimes there are risks and complications (my heart goes out to those that things don't go to plan, that can be soul destroying).
