Low in iron, what symptoms did you have?

Hi I'm really low in iron at the moment, I was just wondering what symptoms you found you have had?

I have been tired which I know is an obvious one, I've also been snappy and quite miserable! I am thinking this could be related to being tired. I have also been over eating a lot but I often do that anyway, just wondering what symptoms others have noticed with it.

Also what did you take to improve iron levels? I found the ones the doctors gave me are too strong and I don't like the side effects.

Haemaglobin is iron. Different trusts use different measurements, your would be 9.5 here. Your body can get use to running on empty, it compensates so you don't feel bad. I was running around London the day before I was called in for a transfusion. It often only shows when you start to get your levels back to normal as you feel really great, if this makes sense.

It can take a few weeks, nemno. It helps to avoid wheat just after and before you've taken it, and to drink some orange juice.

Thank you for replying LadySybil, will follow your advice. I look forward to feeling great!

Smile You will. Did they check your vitamin D levels too? This can make you feel crappy if you're low.

"6.4 is really low"

I thought my Hb was 6.4 turns out thats my iron level (receptionist confused me by saying my level should be 11). My Hb is 12 and I don't have anaemia. In a way I'm not relieved because what on earth is causing my breathlessness, fatigue, palpitations then?

Anxiety?

Low iron seems to be a really common issue though. Hope you feel better soon OP

Vitamin D deficiency, Weneedtotalk? Zinc? They don't routinely check for low vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It may also be wise to ask them to do an ECG.

Weneedtotalkabout · 03/05/2014 21:25

Yes I'm having an ECG so hopefully that will rule out heart problems.

Crunching loads and loads of ice! As soon as my levels became normal it stopped, couldn't do it now! That was the weirdest one.

I personally recommend a double spatone and berocca cocktail first thing every morning.

low ferritin can cause breathlessness palpitations and fatigue I'm iron deficient but no Anemia and it's down to my ferritin which is your iron stores
