Hi

Having my varicose veins stripped in a couple of weeks and my period will be due around that time. My SIL suggested I take Norethisterone to delay my period but I'm not sure whether it is safe to take before/during surgery.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi CADS definately not safe to talk any new medication before surgery!! You have to stop taking the pill before some major surgeries because of the increased risk of DVT, hormones can make your blood more sticky. Speak to your GP to discuss options, is it a general or local anaesthetic?

Thanks Katyjo

Just what I thought. It's general anaesthetic. Will just have to hope that it's not early.

I would discuss this with your doctor. That said the reason that you stop the pill prior to surgery is because of theadditional risk of a DVT and this is linked to the Oetrogen in the combined pill and not the progestogen. Norethisterone only contains the progestogen, so shouldn't add to the DVT risk.

I would discuss this with your GP to be sure
