Bleeding during Intercourse - what's going on??

OK, I am a very irregular poster and chronic lurker, and after what happened last night I am turning to you all for your help and input.

My periods have started to get very close together - I am down to a 3 week cycle - last period started beginning of this month and lasted 10 days. Last night, I bled during sex, which was a surprise to both of us to say the least! Nothing rough, nothing unusual. Normal married sex. Since then, nada, although I have the rumblings of AF about to begin.

So my questions are - does this sound familiar to anyone? Why would I have a short bleed, then nothing?? Can I really have a period lasting 10 days and then start another one 8 days later?? What the is going on. If the gap gets any shorter I will be more on than off!!

Advice gratefully sought.

You really, really need to see a GP or GYN about this.

A lot of different things can cause this.

bootsmonkey · 21/08/2006 16:19

Thanks expat - I will, but she is on holiday until the end of this month. Just wondering if anyone had any experience of this?

Can you see a nurse or someone who can swab you? Even a family planning clinic.

There are so many possible causes of this, including bacterial vaginosis or thrush.

Also if you are having more frequent, longer periods, it needs checked out.

suejonez · 21/08/2006 16:22

Bleding could be an erosion, very common especially if you are on the pill, not dangerous. That would cause bleeding during sex. If not that, then it's probably hormonal - you need to see your GP. They may try you on a short course of primolut (progesterone) or similar or put you on the pill for a couple of months. If neither of those work, she will probably refer you to a gynae.

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:23

Fibroids can also cause frequent bleeding.

Could be lots of different things.

PanicPants · 21/08/2006 16:26

Can I do a quick hijack?

This might be similiar to you bootsmonkey.

I bleed after sex in the week to 10 days before my period is due. I haven't been to gp as, as it's regular and I don't bleed always I've kind of assumed it's ok.

Should I go and see gp?

suejonez · 21/08/2006 16:28

Is it just a little spotting panicpants, are you on the pill?

PanicPants · 21/08/2006 16:30

No I'm not on the pill, and yes it's spotting, sometimes only straight after sex, sometimes lasting a day or so (although very light only need a pantyliner not sanitary towel)

I normally think, right well I'll be starting my period in the next week or so then.

MrsJohnCusack · 21/08/2006 16:31

could be so many things, only a doc can help I'm afraid!
but before you go, think about anything else that could be connected - pain during sex, swollen tummy, any other strange pains or feeling, what if any pill/contraception are you on, did you change/stop recently etc.

the problem with gynaecological stuff is it's all so closely related and close together that you can miss things and not think them worth mentioning to the GP - and none of us can neccesarily say what could be causing the bleeding because it could be so many things!

bootsmonkey · 21/08/2006 16:35

In my case it is out of the blue - enough to change the sheets, no difference in any other area. Had the Mirena removed a year ago - not using any contraception, nothing changed. Not really concerned at the mo. Put the fear of God into DH last night when I said I wasn't totally sure it was me - sent him scurrying to the bathroom clutching his bits!

lol botmonkey!

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:37

Are you TTC, bootsmonkey?

At any rate, it's best to see a GP asap.

PanicPants · 21/08/2006 16:38

Oops sorry bootmonkey

bootsmonkey · 21/08/2006 16:40

No, not TTC. DH won't get the snip. I am driven mad by taking hormones. Not keen on the cap, coil would make periods even worse by all accounts. Figure it is up to DH now. I have done my bit contraception wise. If he can't face the snip tehn he has to be VERY careful... However, if this carries on, it may be taken out of our hands!

are your smear tests up to date chaps? Am sure GP will ask this when you see them anyway.

bootsmonkey · 21/08/2006 17:00

Yup. Within the last 12months. Also been swabbed recently in preparation for a coil.

Thanks for asking
