Meningitis, my uncle just died!!

Hello all.

My uncle died yesterday. He was in his early 50's and my Aunt found him dead in bed!
They did a postmortem and today i just found out they said it was,"Pyrogenic meningitis".
We are all so shocked!!

I think it was NHS Direct told my Aunt that everyone needed antibiotics who had been in contact with him! Then the serious disease people rang and said it wasn't contagious!

This is gonna sound incredibly selfish, but has anyone heard of this type of meningitis?
Is it contagious?
I am worried about even seeing my Aunt at home with my dd!!!(I will research a bit later but thought you wise women may know more!!!)

Put's things in perspective really doesn't it??

That's very sad, I'm so sorry. It's actually pyogenic meningitis, and you get loads of google hits with this.

whymummy · 17/03/2004 19:08

i'm so sorry angeliz,it must be awful for all of you
don't think you're being selfish, just concern for your dd wich is totally normal,i would be too.
take care
hugs (((((((((())))))))

tamum · 17/03/2004 19:12

In fact, thinking about it, pyogenic means it must be bacterial, so I would have thought you should be getting antibiotics. However, the serious disease people may have known more about the type of bacteria and made a decision on that basis.

Hulababy · 17/03/2004 19:14

I am so sorry Angeliz.

Why not phone NHS Direct or phone your GP just to check - it isn't selfish, you have to protect your DD too.

Janh · 17/03/2004 19:20

It means bacterial meningitis apparently - or at least, if you look up pyogenic you get referred to bacterial.

angeliz, you are right to be concerned - bacterial meningitis is curable with antibiotics, unlike viral, but is more likely to be fatal, unlike viral.

So huge sympathy for your aunt - what a dreadful shock - he must have been ill but they probably thought it was flu. But, yes, I would be wary of your dd seeing her - there is a medical difference between contagious and infectious (contagious means catching from touch) and that might be why NHS Direct said it isn't contagious. I'm pretty sure it is infectious.

Janh · 17/03/2004 19:21

I mean the serious disease people.

Thanks everyone+

thanks+++

I just cant stop worrying now! I am doing a bit of reading up. I haven't seen any of them (Aunt-Uncle or cousins for ages), the worrying thing for me is going to see them! I must sound self obsessed but it's dd i'm thinking of!
I'm sure her immune system is not to great at the moment as she's had a cough for months and just worry about the implications! Also on the front of my local paper tonight about a 19 year old boy dying withtin 6 hours through meningitis!
DD didn't have the hib booster either!
It's just one of those things you try not to think about till you have to!

angeliz, how's things?did you find out if is safe to visit your uncle's family?

Angeliz · 18/03/2004 17:11

Hi whymummy and everyone,(nice to see you again BTW)
I called the Meningitis helpline last night and the lady there said that the Health Authorities are extra vigilant about it so if we've been told it's o.k it will be. I am obviously still a bit worried but i saw my Aunt today and my cousins.

I wasn't that close to my Uncle these last years,(was when i was little), but it really hit me today! Both my cousins in their early twenties and are devestated and my Aunt blames herself!

I cryed a fair bit which suprized me! DD didn't come with me but later on she saw me crying and said," It's o.k mammy, my tummy is better now!",(she was sick this morn). Bless her+

Thanks to everyone for their kind messages and thinking of me.
