Is a Gallstone a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance purposes?

Sooo.....trying to book travel insurance on line for a trip to Bangkok and Phuket. I do have a Gallstone and have had 2 (fairly minor) attacks in last 10 years. Wondering whether I need to declare.

The situation was aggravated by taking Alli last summer and I became more aware, but again, nothing more than minor niggles, and as soon as I stopped taking Alli everything was fine. It was after taking Alli that I had a scan and discovered a large Gallstone.

I was initially offered Gallstone removal due to its size, but once they realised that I had been pain free for six months and did not need to modify my diet, they said they would not advise it.

As Gallstones are so common and I am probably no more 'at risk' than someone who does not know they have got them - do I need to declare?

Yes, you do need to disclose it

Definitely need to disclose as it could flare up again at any time.
DH had gallstones that caused him pain and then went quiet for 12 months before flaring up again. Consultant told him to have his gall bladder removed and was surprised he had left it so long - like you DH didn't see the point in an op when it wasn't really causing much trouble. However, gallstones can very suddenly cause a medical emergency so you would absolutely not want your insurance to be invalidated if you had not declared it.
We even held off booking a holiday until after DH had had surgery, only to find when we tried to book the week after his Op, Thompsons insurers wouldn't insure him at all - for anything (never had any other health problems) until a Dr had declared him fit to travel - even though we weren't intending to travel for another 2 months. Fortunately, we had another product which included travel insurance and they would cover immediately except for anything relating to his gall bladder removal.
With insurance - if in doubt - declare.

If you need to make a claim and don't disclose it. Then when your GP fills in the insurance claim form they will have to mention it and even if the claim is for a broken leg they won't cover it. So yes, declare

Thanks. OK overwhelming response is - yes this is a pre-existing medical condition. Wish Consultant had advised an op now. He said no point. Grrrr.

I have found Insure and Go very good for pre ex medical conditions.
