How do you know if your child is fat or merely thickset?

ds2 has always at the top of the weight for his age. He is built like a tank. Ive never worried, because he never seemed overweight.

However, he's put on a couple of kilos over the last 4 months, and is now heavier than his brother, 2 years older.

I honestly dont know if he is getting fat or if it is just normal and he is very sturdily built. He is expanding in all directions.
Can anyone think of some giveaway signs that he would be getting too fat?

He eats the same as the other children, but more.

CountessDracula · 17/08/2006 11:21

I seem to remember one of my books has it for slim, normal and thickset frames, I may consult that tonight

anyway she sounds fine!

Nemo1977 · 17/08/2006 11:21

I have used dds book which was brought out last year as it is a little different to ds.

Nemo1977 · 17/08/2006 11:23

stand corrected on height was looking at 100cms.

Crackle · 17/08/2006 11:23

This is a fantastic site for calculating children's BMI.

BMI for children

It works for adults too. I know BMI isn't the be all and end all but it is a great indicator of overall health. I like this site because it also makes recommendations and is very practical.

my dd is 4.5 and is 111cm and 19 kilos. she certainly doesn't look overweight but that is much heavier (and taller) than average. she eats v healthy diet but has a hearty appetite.

tortoise · 17/08/2006 11:25

3 yr old girl.50th centile= height 95cm,weight just above 14kg.

Mascaraohara · 17/08/2006 11:25

I have lost my red book is there anywhere onine you can see the centiles?

My dd is 4 and weighs over 3st.. I think she is probably overweight

dinny · 17/08/2006 11:29

what is 111cm in feet and inches?

CrocodileKate · 17/08/2006 11:32

3ft 7 and a half inches.

tortoise · 17/08/2006 11:33

Just weighed DD1 age 3 and she is 16.2kg(2.8st).
I wouldn't class it as over weight.50th centile is the average weight not the exact weight.

Nemo1977 · 17/08/2006 11:33

whats 98cms to ft and inches?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/08/2006 11:33

Thanks tortoise.

DD is 98cms. Weight is 15kg.

CrocodileKate · 17/08/2006 11:34

3ft 2 1/2.

dinny · 17/08/2006 11:36

thank you, CK! just done it and bmi is 59th centile so she's just tall for age, I suppose. do wory when loads of her friends are only just over two stone (the weight of my 23 month old)... but think my children are just made big!

Nemo1977 · 17/08/2006 11:37

ok so according to that website ds is underweight aswell..less than 5th centile

Nemo1977 · 17/08/2006 11:38

ds doesnt look underweight though...what do I do force feed him?

CountessDracula · 17/08/2006 11:38

is 101 about 3 foot 4 inches?

That site needs to have a metric option!

CrocodileKate · 17/08/2006 11:41

Yes

Bozza · 17/08/2006 11:41

I obviously have no idea of my childrens' heights. I put them both in that BMI calculator with their actual weights and rough guesses at their heights and DS came out as overweight and DD came out as dangerously overweight. This is the girl who when put in the correct aged trousers they fall off. Methinks I am bad at guessing.

CountessDracula · 17/08/2006 11:42

A 4 year old (female) child who is 37.0 pounds and 3 feet and 4 inches tall, has a body mass index of 16.3, which is at the 76.7th percentile and is considered to be a healthy weight

good

mumfor1standfinaltime · 17/08/2006 11:44

Ds must be tall then he is 90cm and only 19 months old!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/08/2006 11:45

A 3 year and 4 month old (female) child who is 34.0 pounds and 3 feet and 2.5 inches tall, has a body mass index of 16.2, which is at the 68.5th percentile and is considered to be a healthy weight.

Sounds fine to me.

IMarriedFatherTed · 17/08/2006 11:46

haha Bozza

I cant guess either

CheesyFeet · 17/08/2006 11:51

DD is on the 83rd centile with a BMI of 17.5, according to that site - about right I would say as she looks in good proportion, although at 2.1 she still has her toddler pot belly .

Shame my BMI is closer to 40
