Is it possible to get 'mild' chickenpox?

Ds had pimply rash under nappy yesterday pm and flat rash up his back. I spoke to my GP who said it sounded like nappy rash, but keep an eye on it etc.
Today my ds's nursery rang to tell me he had a temp of 39.4 I took him to see the dr as he had the same rash down his thighs, some flat rash down the backs of his calves and a blister on his knee. GP said it was chickenpox, but not a typical chicken pox (usually starts behind the ears, apparently and very odd to be confined to nappy area initially). He had a suspected Hand foot and mouth a couple of months back, although that was also very mild, with only a few blisters and none in his mouth, I only agreed with gp diagnosis because a friend's child got the full blown blisters in all 3 paces after visiting us before we knew my ds had it!
So I was wondering if it was possible that he is having a mild attack of chickenpox? If so how long is it likely to last?

yes. ds had a very mild does at 3 months. he only had about 10-12 spots. It went quite quicly .This year the poor little spud developed shingles, so he definalt had CP

So it's not a blessing to only get a mild attack, then? Your poor little ds MB, shingles can be really unpleasant, so I've been told. I'm hoping it IS cp, then and that it gets a bit worse, which seems a really odd thing to say!

yes it is possible, but I thought that the spots were still distinctly chicken pox, not rash like iyswim?

Yes. My girl had classic chickenpox, covered head to toe, little bro definitely also had, but mild enough couldn't tell if long sleeves, etc. Much bigger spots though. Scar on tummy so bad looks like cigerette burn, get paranoid everytime i take him to Docs!

It's an odd looking rash, only one or two blisters and some pimply ones and some flat. Nursery said it looked like a heat rash, btu he didn't get anything like this during the really hot weather. Will keep a close eye on what else develops - little pimply spots were virtually coming up before my eyes earlier! I know that GPs can get it wrong

Monkeybar, my dds ahve just had Cp and in both cases it started in the nappy area. Dd1's was relatively mild with a huge temp. Dd2's was awful but he rtemp was not so high. Nborn ds also got a very mild, weird version of it with spots all over his head so I expect he'll get it again one day.

Monkeybar, our dd1 had a pinprick type rash initially for about 2 days before the ususal blisters appeared. It ran its course like normal CP. If your ds is over two he can have phenergan if he gets very itchy, and there is some great stuff called Eurax suitable for over-threes or over two's with GP permission which is a lotion to put on - much better than calamine.

My dd's chickenpox started in the nappy area - these were the last spots to heal too because they didn't get much air. She wasn't too bad at all, but it was at least a week before the last spot scabbed over.

My son had v v mild chicken pox and then had it for real a few months later. He was under 2 the first time amd nearly 3.5 the next time.

Cheesyfeet - interesting that your dd's cp started innappy area too. I've had ds's nappy off lots over the last two days when I've been off work with him - I decided the carpet could survive a bit of wee and poo! The ones there have started to scab over, as has one on his leg. Poor little chap has a HUGE blister on his knee, though and a fair sized one on the tip of his tongue

Getting it mildly doesn't confer the immunity you see.
