My 18 month ds started having seizures in Feb. He had 6 and was put on Epilim 10 mils a day to stop them. After one of them he stopped breathing- we were in A and E at the time so he was rushed to resuss and they got him breathing again. He was found to have very low blood sugar - 2 (normal range is 4 - 7).Thats been ok since tho. He has had mri, electrodes to head, blood tests but they can find no cause at all. I had normal preg, normal birth - induced at 41 weeks and he is normal development. Has anyone had similar and come up with a cause for the seizures?

I'm sure you're v.worried and not a happymum at all at the mo! It's reasurring that he's been fit free since Feb and that his EEG and MRI were normal. I'm sure your paediatrician has told you that there are quite a few toddlers who present with fits at this age and grow out of them. I'm sure you've been advised re regular food to keep his blood sugard OK and good ol' Calpol if he's got a bit of a temp. Hang in there!!!!

Thanks elliepup. Yes the doc said it wasnt unusual, but its normally linked to a high temp/illness which wasnt the case with him. But all the advice is welcome and helps to reassure me he will grow out of it. Thanks

Hi,
My ds who is two next month has been having seizures since he was 15 months old. He has had 3 standard EEG's 1 24 hour one and an MRI scan that have all come back clear. At this very moment he is having another 24 hour one as his seizure pattern changed last month from clusters of 2-13 seizures in a day every 5 weeks to 2-3 a week. Although the last was nearly 3 weeks ago now. He is on tegretol 5ml twice a day and started epilim just after the last seizure at 2.5mls twice a day.
I also had a normal pregnancy he was 3 days early and birth was very straight forward. He had a run of illness just before the first seizures I think that is why they put them down as febrile to start with. His developement is also ok although we have noticed that he is talking alot more now he isn't having the clusters. He used to be very quiet and withdrawn for up to a week and a half after the clusters.
Have you visited the national epilepsy society website the forums are great and full of parents in similar positions.
My ds stops breathing each time he has a seizure but it usually only lasts the length of the seizure 1-2 minutes.
We have been told that in our case ds needs to have a seizure whilst having an eeg to actually see what activity is happening in the brain.

My firend's son had them at the same age (started at 15 months). They were told febrile at the beginning (despite having no temp!) It did seem to be related to illnesses with him, and having low ion levels. He was given epilim, and now aged 5 was been weaned off epilim about 6 months or so ago and has been seizure free for years.

Hi, Happymomof5,

you know what? no cause is actually good news (that's what we're told by our neurologist!) My son (now 6) started having seizures when hes was 5 months old. he was having a seizure while EEG was taken therefore the EEG showed spikes. and MRI showed that his left temporal lobe is slightly smaller than right temporal lobe. the Dr. said that's nothing significant it's like somebody's borned with left hand smaller than right hand or left eye smaller than right eye. with these results and along with all the blood tests the Dr. concluded that there's no reason found for tis seizures. which is pretty commom ( alot of epilepsy are found to have no cause) he was given Phenobarbital and was on it for a year and a half. he was taken off the medication after that, and is now seizure free since then! our Dr told us that usually when you find a cause it's usually not a good one (something more traumatic eg. brain cancer, tumor etc), so don't you need to worry! no cause is good news and hopfully he'll grow out of it!!
