Colour blindness

How early do you think it would be possible to find out if your child is colour blind?

DS is 2.4 and can't identify colours which isn't terribly shocking in one so young, but as my brother is colour blind I wondered whether it might be a genetic thing he could be susceptable to?

you could carry the faulty gene (its the female that does) - 2½ might be a bit early but just keep a watch.

both my dad and ds1 are colour defective - didn't know for sure about ds until he was 8 because he seemed to manage and it was only when the doctor came to school to see ds2's year that I mentioned ds may be colour defective and she checked and he was!

he's a graphic designer now!

It's great that he's a graphic designer! I checked DD with a few of those numbers made out of coloured dots, and she could see them all.

He might just be a bit slow on the uptake.
If you ask him what colour something is, he always replies "Yellow"

ah! ds 1 used to say 'look at that brown car' when it was green!

girls don't tend to be colour defective they just carry the defective gene that's passed on to the male (but not always - ds2 is fine)

I'm colour defective. Was discovered @ primary @ about 5 with those number dot things. Only main issues with me are shades and reds/greens/browns or purple/blues - i find it near impossible to pick out which is which when in really dark or really light shades.

Opticians can check but they do use numbers up to around 30.

They are like the magic eye pictures where the child has to identify the number in the picture this can be either by telling the optician what number they see or by drawing the number with their finger.

The number is in the different colours so it they can see it they can identify whether they are colour blind or not.

I did this when my ds was 3.5 and confusing red and green.

My ds1 didn't get the hang of colours till he was about 2.5. He always replied either blue' or yellow'. I blame a book called `Wobble bear says yellow' for that actually (Wobble says everything is yellow).

However, since your brother is colour blind there is a chance your ds is too, as you could be a carrier.

I was thinking about this last night and was wondering what red/green colour blind people actually see.
Are red and green seen as the same colour?

I tested DD (4.5) here

as far as I am aware (from ds) they have no trouble with primary colours - its the rest they have problems with!

Jools - No am a laydee I have a fairly severe colour deficiency which my dad has too and which I guess my mum carries.

Yeah I am a definate oddball.

Another more common in males thing I have is leftyness And my dad has a back condition that I just know i'll have got from him cause once again, its more common in males!

There are lots of different kinds of colourblindness, but mostly it's red/green.

My dad is colourblind, as is DS1. I'd been wondering for ages, knowing he had a 1/2 chance, and found out for sure on Sunday, from one of the online tests. He's nearly 5.

Spagblog, I think there's a 1/2 chance you carry the colourblindness gene, and a 1/2 chance your DS has got it from you, so he has a 1/4 chance of being colourblind.

1st test - grey and brown
2nd - yellowy orange and shades of brown
3rd - grey and shades of green
4th - brown and grey
5th - navy and green
6th - green and grey

With the green and brown I can't really decide what is it, so i've mentioned the colour I think it is nearest too IFSWIM!!

1st - grey/green with orange number
2nd - oranges/yellows with green number
3rd - shades of green with orange/red number
4th - reverse of 3rd
5th - shades of green with red/brown number
6th - as 5th, slightly different shades of same colours.

Heheh looks like I was miles off!

Thanks St George - will now go stare at them in the hope I can see the right colours!
