OK I know the live buggers are lice, the black dust is lice poo but WTF are the things stuck on each hair shaft? After four kids, I should know but I'm in despair again. Two of mine have a few live ones, loads of poo and millions of thoselittle stuck things. Do I have to pull each one out individually 'cos the buggers don't come off on the comb and also if you nuke them with the hair stuff, those things are still there! Help....

aren't they the eggs?

waterfalls · 14/08/2006 15:10

They are the eggs and empty shells.

jollymum · 14/08/2006 15:11

I don't know!

So do I have to pull them out or not? It'll take me years. How can one/two frigging nits be so prolific?!

CountessDracula · 14/08/2006 15:13

you need to try that new greasy stuff it makes them slide off

I think it is called Hedrin or something similar

waterfalls · 14/08/2006 15:14

A nit comb and lots of conditioner should get them out. Each adult lice will lay upto 8 eggs a day, thats why there are normally lots.

jollymum · 14/08/2006 15:15

My nit comb doesn't. It takes out the live ones but I literally have to get a nail around each one and scrape it out. Pulls kids hair and makes them scream. Even thinking of getting scissors and cutting each hair5!

yes it is Hedrin just looked
It has silicone in it, it is the slipperiest oil imaginable. It drowns the nits and they then fall out, I tried on dd and she woke up with a bed full of dead nits

geekgrrl · 14/08/2006 15:17

the bug buster kit comes with a special nit comb - it's very effective at getting the nits out - IMHO much better than the nitty gritty comb.

jollymum · 14/08/2006 15:17

So how come they slide off (sorry to be dim) when I have to scrape them off?

OP posts:
geekgrrl · 14/08/2006 15:21

conditioner or hedrin or just plain normal household vinegar contain something that weakens the adhesive used to stick the eggs to the hair, so they slide off easily.

jollymum · 14/08/2006 15:23

Vinegar? That sounds interesting, I find conditioner builds up on the comb and I can't see what I'm pulling off. If I rinse the comb, everything disappears.More info please

with hedrin there is nothing left to comb out! Put it on in the afternoon and let it dry then wash out in the morning.

jollymum · 14/08/2006 15:26

OK will try the conditioner first then Hedrin. Expensive, isn't it?! BTW anyone else itching now...hmmm...?
