my dd1 gets blue lips when she is very cold, she had them today after her swimming lesson. She has very pale skin, don't know if that is a factor.Once she has warmed up they go back to a normal pink colour.
Has she had this before? because my dd2 had blue lips just before a febrile convulsion - don't want to alarm you.

cold?

This is how I found mn - my dd went blue, I was going to a wedding and rushing around and her lips then cheeks went blue. I frantically rushed in to google, came across mn, posted a q and within 1 min had about 10 responses - is she cold?

Of course I was hot from rushing around, she had been sitting down and had got v v cold

misdee, apparently blue lips are only due peripheral cyanosis and don't actually mean anything on their own.

A blue tongue however does indicate low sats.

I hope that's put your mind at ease somewhat. My dd2 used to have blue lips and fingertips in the mornings which I was very concerned about (even though her heart is fixed I still can't help waiting for the other shoe to drop IYKWIM). My GP wasn't particularly worried and explained about peripheral cyanosis, but went went for a 24 hour sats monitoring anyway, which turned out to be fine. The paed also agreed that blue lips without any other symptoms are harmless.

I regularly get blue lips. I look a bit odd with them but it gets worse when I am cold.

misdee · 10/08/2006 20:35

thank you. mumsnet is brilliant!

I just read up on it a bit more - apparently sometime your blood vessels just constrict a bit - often because you are cold, but sometimes it's 'just one of those things', and this leads to sluggish circulation in the extremeties.
more about the two different types of cyanosis

LadyTophamHatt · 10/08/2006 20:38

ds3 used to get that alot, not quite as often now but I still notice it occaiosnally.

It used to scare the life out of me because we were referred to th hospital about a heart mermur when he was tiny.

Anyway, it wasn't anything linked to his heart but just when he was cold and because he's so teeny (your dd3 is weeny for her age too, isn't she) it seemed top show more because he hasn't got a lovely chubby coating or flesh like lots of other toddlers. He's lovely but is a bag of bones!

Also my mum said it can be a sign of dehydration. Not entirely sure where she got that from though...

Elf1981 · 10/08/2006 20:38

(mine is due to circulation - also very pale under the eyelids which is usually due to iron levels but mine are high so my doc said it was just circulation)

southeastastra · 10/08/2006 20:39

it was so cold today, i really feel it and go a funny colour weren't you cold? people had coats on here

nutcracker · 10/08/2006 20:39

Dd2 has this alot Misdee especially when she is cold and very often after a bath actually.

nutcracker · 10/08/2006 20:39

Thats funny you should say that about dehydration LTH because Dd2 is a bugger for not drinking.

LadyTophamHatt · 10/08/2006 20:40

90% of the time ds3's blue lips were after the bath....

misdee · 10/08/2006 20:51

we were in side, so wasnt cold

but it was after a bath. yes dd3 is small.

My youngest ds gets this regualarly misdee and also started noticing my eldest ds going blue sometimes too, but only when he is really cold or his body temp drops quickly.
