Achillies Tendon

My dad fell off a step ladder last Saturday and badly hurt his ankle. Being of the male perssuasion (sp?)he only went to the hospital yesterday. After x rays it was found not broken but he has damaged his achillies tendon. He has been put in plaster and has crutches until Friday when he has to go back. He seems to think he will go on Friday and all will be better. I have a feeling thats not the case. Has anyone ever suffered with this problem please? How long does recovery take? He is a really bad patient and despite being nearly 70 he has never really been ill or had any accidents before.

Depends what damage he has done. Sometimes the tendon is surgically repaired if it has totally snapped or resting in plaster for up to 6 weeks for a severe tear

Thankyou LaylaandSethsmum. It is not snapped but torn apparently. Does anyone know if there are varying degrees of tear. What I am wondering is if there is any chance he will be off crutches and out of plaster within a week (Friday) or is this wishfull thinking?
