Quick question - menigitus, does the rash disappear when a glass is placed over it or not?

I can't remember which way round it goes.

Ds has a rash which the redness disappears when I place a glass over it.

He's a bit listless and off his food, but otherwise ok.

Do I need to be worried?

With meningitus the rash won't dissapear under a glass.

zippitippitoes · 08/08/2006 19:14

Thanks nutcracker - I thought it was that way round but wanted to double check.

No problem, hope he's better soon.

PanicPants · 08/08/2006 19:16

Yes he is teething so it's probably that or a heat rash.

I must write it down somewhere so I can remind myself. You'd think I'd remember something that important wouldn't you?

Have a look next time your at the docs or health visitors, sometimes surgeries have little cards with the symptoms on. I have one on the board in the kitchen and one in my purse i think.

PanicPants · 08/08/2006 19:20

Thats a very good idea. I'll see if they have any.

Thankyou everyone.

Remember a child can have Meningitis without a rash.

PanicPants · 08/08/2006 19:28

Really?

What are the other symptoms in a baby?

I know they have cold hands and feet, headache and stiff neck. But in a baby how can you tell?

isn't temperature one idicator along with very drowsy/hard to wake etc

babies can get viral rashes if they are bit under the weather

Menningitis rash is like when you were little and someone gave you a 'twister' on your arm, and you get like little darkish red blood blister looking rash. Menningitis rash is very similar.

liquidclocks · 08/08/2006 19:47

I heard that before they get to the floppy stage they might scream in a very high pitched cry.

PP - if the rash doesn't go tomorrow I'd ring your doctor/HV (whichever you like the most) to ask advice.

amyjade · 08/08/2006 19:52

Have a look on www.meningitis.org for symptoms and different strains.

The rash is a sign of septecemia which you usually get with the meningicoccal strain.
There is no rash with Pneumococcal meningitis.

Don't worry panicpants i'm sure your Ds is fine, just check out the symptoms on meningiis research website to be sure.

Have put him to bed and taken his temp - it's only 36.8 so not too worried but will check out rash tomorrow.

But the rash is only on his arms, legs and face, not on his trunk and it's like little pimples.
