The Back Story Continues

This is the support thread for all sufferers of back pain. Everyone most welcome to join.

Here's our first thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/1871592-The-Back-Story

My story long and grim but basically had failed surgery for disc prolapse, then further failed surgery to attempt to salvage the situation. I have nerve root damage and severe scarring around the nerve at L5 which won't get better. I'm 48, can't work, take a lot of drugs and have a blue badge. Currently battling several different agencies for ill health retirement and other benefits.

But I'm ok, having some fun despite the pain and have made some lovely friends on here.

Please post and include your story if you'd like to. No niggles too small, this is strictly non competitive! Smile

Hi all

Thanks again for all your support.

My cough seems slightly better today so less muscle spasms. The mri was complete hell - trying not to cough was impossible. I do hope they got some good images.

An emergency doctor came out at 1am because my breathing isn't great I have bad asthma and my oxygen levels are quite low. I did sleep well though.

I've decided to stop feeding as I'm on such a huge level of drugs and I'm sure it's not great for the baby.

Hoping to get results from mri today or tomorrow - they said 48 hours

Xx

fizzle that sounds like the right decision. She's had the important bit already so huge respect to you for doing it. I'm a midwife and I know. Really hope you get the MRI result quickly, think pavlov might be slightly jealous, hers took about three months.

So, absolutely no beating yourself up, you are awesome for doing so well. Might I suggest that you give up slowly rather than take the goodness approach (!). If you drop one or two feeds then a few days later drop another otherwise you might end up in engorged boob hell which, given the circs you might prefer to avoid. Then firm bras and no fiddling. I would, if you can try to stop over say 4-7 days.

goodness yes I have a real potty mouth these days. Mind you, midwives can be very ahem down to earth Wink. I have sent a very bad hex to your fb 'friend' (hope you have instantly de friended her?). She's an ignorant bitch. Actually I simply can't imagine writing that to anyone, let alone a real friend. Still, we all know that what we deserve versus what we get isn't always fair or equal.

pavlov is the jump today? Thank you are very brave to even consider it. I was always a scaredy cat cos it looks so far down to the bottom of the pool. Isn't Tom Daly a local lad? Ask him to do it!! Smile

sounds like you are still having a bit of a bad time fizzle but at least you are a bit better. Don't feel bad about the breast-feeding, looking after you is looking after your baby. It may mean you can control your pain better, there may be more options now. I loved bf-ing but i found it was tiring and took a lot out of me and i cannot imagine doing it while having a serious health issue going on- you are superstar for getting this far! Your dh can help a bit more too now, so that might take some pressure off. hope the mri results are good Smile
excited for you 17 let us know how th interview went.

Goodness Grin Grin Grin for your stream of consciousness posting this morning Wink. I am not bothered by the BB/disabled thing either. I have decided to look at it as something that will make my childrens lives better as there will be more of me to go around if I can cancel out some of the walking for chores/shopping. Just in from reading with my lovely year 3 and 4's, now straight back out to get some hedrin as DS3 appears to have had an attack of the creepy crawleys and I used up the bottle on his head!

I think the interview went well -he told me I was very perceptive which I think was a compliment

Problem is he's in no rush to make a decision

Arrrrgh!

Matildathecat · 11/03/2014 16:44

Urghhhhh! No, banish the creepy crawlies. Only had them once in our house but when I discovered them their entire heads were crawling with the little bastards. I still shudder when I think of them Shock

17 fingers crossed. What was the job? You're doing well to be getting interviews.

Hope nobody is suffering too much. Went to rehab Pilates class and the jury's out. Will try again and the decide. Achey now with unpleasant stinging in both legs. Have resorted to codeine and considering a couple of sneaky episodes of Breaking Bad. You see? No children at home...easy.Smile

Btw very, very off topic (what's new?) but my ds1 passed his driving theory test today so can really get going on the driving lessons. He's had a few but unfortunately we both drive automatics so can't practise with him. Hope he passes soon. Then he can chauffeur me around for a changeGrin.

17 you must be doing something right to be getting these interviews, jobs are like hens teeth round here at least. Very perceptive sounds like a huge compliment.

Fizzle if you feel that stopping feeding is the best thing for you then you should do it, I have been there and I think the most useful thing at that point would have been someone telling me that it was FINE to do that, once the decision is made that's it, no worrying or researching or beating yourself up. You've done the best you can in conditions that are unimaginable to 99% of the population which is pretty impressive going tbh. My lovely FF sons are awesome and beautiful and loved which is all they need.

Urgh and shudder to the creepy crawlies but there weren't many first time so next lot is just belt and braces job. I am dreading doing it right now though because my back feels like it is being stabbed with ice cold blades at bra strap level but then I have been sitting in a 'proper' chair most of the day so of course it does Hmm. This is why no golf, I like to be different so the worst of my degeneration is at T8-9 level, I have some cracking bony spurs going between them, for which there is no cure or operation, just trying not to annoy them. Golf with the swingy arms not terribly good for that Grin.

Report
Matildathecat · 11/03/2014 19:32

lost, have you not tried that wonderful volterol gel for your vertebral degeneration and bony spurs?Wink Smile.

Sounds bloody painful. Chairs are truly the work of the devil. What happened to that recliner prototype we were working on?

Can I join? Suffering a lot with my back at the moment. Feeling quite low today about it to be honest. Has those crappy injections and then surgery which significantly helped but still suffering a lot. Today is a particularly bad day. Been having a bad few weeks to be honest. If I go back to the doctor for more painkillers they just give you a look as if suggesting you are some loopy druggie... Sad

Report
Matildathecat · 11/03/2014 19:55

Hi Ellie, sorry to meet you here but welcome. We're pretty friendly. I won't insult you with the Volterol gel joke.

Can you tell us more or we can just give sympathy?

I've done the surgery, crappy injections and a fair bit more so know it's not a club you really want to join. Glad to have you, though.

And if you need the painkillers insist on having them. They are keeping us lot afloat. Sad

Waves at Ellie, step aside a mo' though, that sounds grim do you have a pain clinic?

Report
17leftfeet · 11/03/2014 20:30

Hi Ellie

Do you mean the 'you can't possibly need MORE drugs!!' look?

I think most of the people that go to the gps with back pain get a prescription for painkillers and then don't go back so when you appear in their office saying it still hurts they get a bit freaked out!

Report
Matildathecat · 11/03/2014 20:34

My GP almost cries when she sees me because drugs are about all she can offer me. She's been great. At least I don't go short there...

Nobody should feel embarrassed to ask for pain relief.
