This is the support thread for all sufferers of back pain. Everyone most welcome to join.

Here's our first thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/1871592-The-Back-Story

My story long and grim but basically had failed surgery for disc prolapse, then further failed surgery to attempt to salvage the situation. I have nerve root damage and severe scarring around the nerve at L5 which won't get better. I'm 48, can't work, take a lot of drugs and have a blue badge. Currently battling several different agencies for ill health retirement and other benefits.

But I'm ok, having some fun despite the pain and have made some lovely friends on here.

Please post and include your story if you'd like to. No niggles too small, this is strictly non competitive! Smile

Dd is 9. She does have trouble sleeping sometimes. When my back was really bad we got out of all our routines and it is so hard to get back into good habits. I am not very good on the discipline side of things I am afraid. She told me earlier she wished she could be home schooled! (she had seen a girl on youtube who is hs) I said no way, it is hard enough to make you do your project, you would not learn a thing.

livelablove · 22/02/2014 13:18

She is quite bright and very creative, she has made a lovely collage of the Mary Rose, but it is soooo hard getting her to apply herself to her work.

livelablove · 22/02/2014 13:21

17 you need some Cake and Brew (hotchoc)Is MN in bed an option?

LostInWales · 22/02/2014 13:23

17 don't sit on your lovely sofa, get a blanket and have nice lie down .

17leftfeet · 22/02/2014 13:24

Bed not really an option, I've adopted one of the dining chairs and I'm getting up and going for a wander round the kitchen every half an hour or so

The kids are at their dad's so at least I don't have to do things to any kind of schedule today

LostInWales · 22/02/2014 13:39

Sorry livelab, I'll apply for dispensation in advance next time Wink. I didn't even go out, I was chatting to some friends on FB and sharing lots of pictures of half naked rugby players watching the match.

Paracetamol vv good with tramadol too, makes it work a lot better. Just had a great morning with my football team, had a little bit of burny pain down one SI joint but it was tolerable and I even broke into quite a brisk walk at times, it was SO exciting!Grin I am celebrating now by watching more rugby and lying on the sofa so that I don't over do it. Rock and roll!

I love midwives, such an incredibly stressful job, to be in charge of the most important moments of life takes someone special. All mine have been amazing but the one that saw me through the delivery of DS3 was superb, it all got a bit hairy and she stayed calm and collected and kept everyone else together until he was resuscitated, I look back now and think 'how could that have seemed so fine and normal with no panic' but it was, that takes an epic skill level! (Damn child and his giant head, I like to think it's because it's stuffed with brains but I think it's actually mischievous plans to turn his mother grey).

I could NEVER home school. That must take such amazing parents, with patience and other things I really don't have. Projects from school, urgh, the whole idea makes my blood run cold!

livelablove · 22/02/2014 14:20

I know Losty I just hate projects! What about some nice worksheets to fill in eh? The good thing about dds school is they give them most of December and July off homework. They do have a homework club for recalcitrant homeworkers and i may have to resort to sending her to that. It is before school though so a bit of a rush getting there.

Glad your football went well, hopefully those injections are starting to work.

Matildathecat · 22/02/2014 17:06

O dear, I swallowed my tramadol and gabapentin then went shopping round town with my lovely friend. She's my saviour yet can also lead me astray...

So, next weekend I have an important (to me) reunion of girls from exactly 30 Blush years ago. I know, some of you were barely conceived, can't help that Grin. So of course I want to look at least a bit good and not too cripplish. This leads to purchases. Hidden in the wardrobe things. I must stop spending and behave like someone with no income (which is what I am). Mind you, hair and nails need attention.

goodness that reminds me, do not attempt to cut your own hair! You will be sad and sorry afterwards.

Lying on bed, my default position feeling sore, but also a little bit excited about my new stuff even though currently hidden Confused.

Matilda you are one very bad lady. What did you buy? Grin It's nice to be frivolous once in a while, although you are actually going somewhere and have a reason to splurge so not technically classed as frivolous in my eyes!

Glad you're match went well Lost and that you didn't pay for it too much. A brisk walk indeed, you'll be doing the marathon next!

It's been another pottering day here, a bit of homework done, a lego castle made and Cowboy casserole for tea. Soon be time to collapse in front of the log burner with a nice brew.

Wishing everyone a peaceful (and sick free) evening.

17leftfeet · 22/02/2014 18:03

Just woken up from a 2 hour granny nap -never good!

PavlovtheCat · 22/02/2014 19:29

cowmopwhat is cowboy casserole? Does it have sausages and baked beans in? I used to have cowboy pie at school which was spam and baked beans in pastry. Loved that! One kids are playing Lego too. Fab stuff.

matilda I thought of you in sainsburys this evening (yep, had to go again as didn't have enough for dinner despite DH going yesterday! He only did a quik shop). I remember that shopping on tramadol is not great for the wallet and had to be so careful and put things back, no wonder you bought lots, with gabapentin in the mix! What did you buy? I bought Thai take away deal, and a zillion candles and photo trades Grin DH was like this Shock I just need some more candle holders now...

Very jealous of the 2 hour nap 17, that would give me a headache but would so love to be able to sleep in the day.

losty I couldn't home school either! same as you, a can just about get dd to do her homework let along guide her with more involved stuff, she is so not good at taking instruction from her parents, much better learning from others. and I have no patience. Glad she did it in the end!

PavlovtheCat · 22/02/2014 19:31

live I directed that stuff about he and your dd to you not losty!

And yes to laying on the sofa 17, we don't do sitting on sofas on this thread! we lay on them. Hope your two hour nap was doing just that?!

17leftfeet · 22/02/2014 19:54

The nap was definitely on the sofa -making up for last night

Problem is I won't sleep tonight now though

Matildathecat · 22/02/2014 20:15

I bought a slouchy dress from Phase Eight, a top from Mint Velvet ( to wear with skinny black tres and Fly boots next weekend) and a totally gorgeous orange handbag to go with above. A lot of my wardrobe is greyish so handbag is my splash of colour! All this is the fault of Tammy, Gabby and co Grin. pavlov I hope this will help you understand your client's transgressions more easily. I just couldn't help it. Wink

Home schooling would have = prison for life for me. Certain murder within the first week. Teachers deserve every penny and every minute of their holidays. However, was asking ds2 about his current essay ( he's final year Philosophy) and realise that not home schooling was by far the best option. Having said that my parents live in a slightly alternative part of the SW and home schooling is very popular and even in their village there are groups for them to get together. Not for me.

Skinny black trews.

Clients'

Poor typing skills. In my day only the girls and then only the girls who weren't going to pass any exams, studied typing. Oh, what a mistake!

OP posts:
Matildathecat · 22/02/2014 20:19

Ps pavlov, what is a photo trade? I love my candles and light them every single night.

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 22/02/2014 20:56

matilda I meant 'frames' iPad typo! That part of the sw, is quite normal in sw generally I think. Groups meet at local aquarium and utilise their educational rooms, work with the uni, have amazing sports days it's quite amazing and is no long sitting at home doing maths, it's very active and social. They even go on trips away. But. Regardless, it involves teaching my children all day. I love them but could not teach them all day then so evening etc...

Did I tell you when I met that I would give my right arm to live in such a place as there?

cowmop · 22/02/2014 21:16

Pavlov it is the one with beans and sausage, dead quick and easy and more importantly all 3 children eat it.

There is not enough money on this earth to make me home school. There are too many reasons to list, the main one being my complete lack of patience after explaining something 2 or 3 times. Arghhh!

Matilda your purchases sound great especially the orange handbag, I really like a splash of colour.

17 I'm also jealous of your nap, but think I would also regret it come bedtime. Since I've added the second patch into my medicine mix I've found I can't sit for long in the afternoon or this would be the result. Luckily for me there is always some cleaning or tidying or cooking or.....

GoodnessKnows · 22/02/2014 22:29

Hello Ladies!
Haven't read your day's worth (hope things are in the up for you, Pickle and everyone else- crap memory, pls forgive me) yet but have to burst in and tell you I've had the BEST day ever!

After three weeks of wearing surgical stockings (anti-thrombosis), doc has finally granted me new ones - I didn't take that crap about 'the elasticity lasts for 6 months' and SHOWED him the state of mine.
My new ones HAVE TOES!
Now this'll be meaningless to a few of you who, thankfully, haven't had to wear these annoying as hell toeless things. They are WONDERFUL.
No more 'Pull my toes, DH!' He'll love them too!
Then went out and NOT somewhere medically-related. To a shopping outlet store. Bought myself with a kind contribution from DH a bag(s). And a couple of other things. Had to call bank when got home to transfer funds and am now chanting 'lalalala' to keep myself from adding up what I spent.
There seems to be a theme here: miscarriage: bag
Molar pregnancy: bag
Sacral & spinal cord sarcoma even more expensive bag.
There have to be some pay offs!
Jeez - better get back to work quickly!
Now I'll read about all of your days.

GoodnessKnows · 22/02/2014 22:31

Matilda... I bought an orange handbag, too!
My back huuuurts.
Going back to read more. Please excuse inevitable multi-posts. Memory of goldfish so have to type one thought at a time.

GoodnessKnows · 22/02/2014 22:41

Hope vomiting DCs better, permitting better sleepy less worry for all!

Tomorrow has officially been called 'P' day:
Pyjamas
Play
Peppa Pig
Popcorn n a film
get dressed and go to a party

Hopefully my 3 year old DD won't extend the list with her own special 'p'!

Maizie, when is your op? What u having done? Sorry, that not of thread has escaped me.

Interesting to note your comments about paracetamol. My bum huuuurts (walked around shops for hours today and halved paracetamol dose as well as gabapentin 300 to 200. Oxycodone 15 to 5 (over last two weeks, too). Think I'll put the paracetamol up again!

GoodnessKnows · 22/02/2014 22:44

Hope my midwife-comments didn't upset anyone. Sorry!!!!
I had shit time first time around and... they did put me off. Stupid as one teacher shouldn't put people off teachers (I'm 'one of those'). Second time, my midwife was wonderful.

GoodnessKnows · 22/02/2014 22:47

I'm a very good teacher / tutor (modest too - haha) but I could NOT, no not EVER homeschool my DS. DC perhaps, but not him.
And I wouldn't want to 'do' either!

GoodnessKnows · 22/02/2014 22:50

Malt, hair tip noted. Glad I didn't.
Post shopping trip, I'm exactly the opposite on the scale of positive to negative emotions as I was yesterday. Weird!
(Very sorry for multiple posts. It is the only way I can respond properly).
