I've had 6 bouts of severe tonsilitus this year and my doctor has advised removal of the tonsils. Has anyone had this done as an adult and if so - what was recovery like (how long etc) and was it dreadfully painful?
Any info on this appreciated

I had mine done last year at the grand old age of 36.
I would be a liar if I told you it didn't hurt, because it does. However, my general level of health has improved so significantly that it was worth the pain.
If you have any more questions - ask away!!!

Dh had his tonsils removed as part of a larger op a couple of years ago. It was painful, but he said it was really bad (but controllable with painkillers - make them give you some good ones, not just paracetomol!) for about a week and then it was like the nerves suddenly knitted back together and he was fine. He also had part of his soft palate removed so he had an extra source of pain though, so I'm sure you won;t be in quite such a bad way. Good luck.

I had mine done when I was 18. I have to be honest and say that I felt dreadful for about 10 days afterwards.

A friend of mine has just had hers done (aged 36) and said the same thing.

However, the improvement in my general health was so great, that I would definitely suggest you go ahead. It wasn't until they'd been taken out, that I realised how generally unwell I had felt and how easily a small cold or sore throat escalated into something worse.

Hope it goes ok.

Thank you all for your responses - good to know your health improved significantly bugsy2 and littlefish, sounds like its worth it...

Do you remember how long you had to recover bugsy2?

10 days seems to be the average?

Thanks again for all responses
