I have to have one at the end of the month. When I saw the neurologist he said I needed a lumbar spine MRI and one of my head. I've got the appointment letter but I'm not sure it's telling me I'm to have the spine and head ones on the same day. It says:

MRI SPINE LUMBAR 30 MINS
MRI IAMs

is the IAMs one the head one?

Sorry to be a dope. You can see why I need my head examined.

I would hazard a guess that they will do them one after the other - I had my head and neck done last yr in 2 separate scans one after the other

I had one done after the other on my spine and then my head. You have to lie very still inside the machine while it makes strange clicking noises ! Theres a mirror so you can see out and not feel claustrophobic, and theres a panic button too if you get scared, but it was fine, the hardest part was trying to keep still !
Hope it all goes well for you

Thanks so you think IAMs might mean a head scan?

I am quite nervous about it. Do you think if anything worrying shows up they'd contact you before the return appointment with the neurologist? Mine is not until a further 6 months time, so long to wait for the results ...

Hi, imaginaryfriend. My DH had a lumbar puncture and MRI scan on the same day. He found the lumbar puncture a bit uncomfortable, but ok. His results took ages to come through as well - he had to go and see his consultant neurologist.

In the meantime, though, all the nurses must have known what he was in for, as they all started talking to us about it as if we already knew .

Best of luck!

thanks verso. I phoned the x-ray dept. this morning and they 'thought' the IAMs sounded like part of the head so I'm assuming they will happen together. They also said that if anything shows up on the scans that is untoward the neurologist would ask to see me sooner. I hope so. My return appointment is January 07!!!
