My poor elderly dad who I am full time carer for is in hospital at the moment after suffering a bowel prolapse which keeps falling out causing him to bleed heavily. He has had a blood transfusion so far and his bloods are up to 91. So far so good. But he will need surgery and the odds are stacked against him. He is 73 with copd so being put to sleep is a big risk. I love my dad to bits and am distraught trying to find an answer which us best for him. Has anyone ever heard of this operation being done under epidural? Thank you for reading

Do you mean rectal prolapse ?

Am not an anaesthetist but in theory could be done however the procedure can take a long time which can mean the spinal will wear off.
Secondly is usually done in a position which is flat on back with legs in the air with head down which can be very difficult to tolerate under a spinal, especially if breathing not good.

Why don't you ask for a meeting with the anaesthetist to discuss the risks vs benefits ?
They may feel is not possible due to factors above but can go through all the options

Thanks hatescolds I see what you mean. Sorry I did mean rectal. Where having a meeting sometime this week with the aneasthetist to discuss the risks. At the moment it keeps falling out causing swelling then he has to be hooked up to morphine. It breaks my heart to see him in pain so I've encouraged him to opt for the surgery. Just wrestling with my conscience wether it's the right decision.

I would love someone to tell me it will be fine :-(
