Help me! I had my tonsils out on Mon, and was sent home being told to eat and drink normally etc. Well I would love to but it is SO painful that I struggle to swallow my own saliva. I am taking every painkiller I can and nothing seems to even take the edge off. Has anyone else been through this, and if so when does is get better. I am frightened off getting an infection which apparantly can happen if you don't eat, and I must be dehydrated cos I am hardly drinking anything.

Ring the ward you were on where you had it done and ask for their advice. They are obliged to help you post operatively.

I had this done as an adult and it is very painful-you have my sympathies.
I was told to gargle with soluble aspirin before swallowing it and it did offer some relief.

Erm, you may think it crazy but I remember that when I was young children who had had their tonsils out were feed lemon sorbet for a few days, I don't know why, but all of them were so chuffed at the treatment that I suppose it worked, or at least made it more bearable

But before trying anything else, I think that you should ring the ward, better to check if so much pain is normal.

Hi macb1702

I had mine out when i was 20 and it was agony afterwards. You must keep sipping a drink all the time.If your throat gets really dry the pain is def worse. You should also have gp to have a look, mine got infected after the op and i had ab's and felt normal within 2 days of having them.

HTH and ((((hugs))))
