What Can I use for dry sore skin on my face?

It's not liking the cold and wind. not helped by recent hormonal spurt when I had a rare period (implant). My face is sore and stingy, my lips are cracked in the corner, my eyes are sore. When my back is sore like this, or my feet are sore, I have a soak in the bath or a hot shower.

Does heat work? Anything else that I can use to ease the soreness? I am using vaseline every day for my lips and while they are less dry, they are a still peeling a little and the deep crack to one side bleeds when I eat (ouch).

What do you recommend - either for a day to day moisturiser, a 'routine' or some amazing anecdote of something organic that might be in my fridge that might work in an instant. I don't know, porridge and honey or something mixed in a paste with a bit of old courgette or something...

I am drinking more water/liquids. So that's not the problem.

There's probably some olive oil at home which would make a difference, and if my skin needs help I find Neutrogena Multi-Repair Cream's good, but GP or chemist might have something better. Old courgettes best avoided.

fedup21 · 08/01/2014 21:21

Vaseline is just a barrier cream-it won't add moisture to your lips. Get some Blistex or Carmex.

What about trying some Nivea (cheap stuff in the little blue tub) or EA 8 hour cream for your face? that's pretty fab.

PurpleJellyDisc · 08/01/2014 21:24

Burts bees res-a ointment

Mintyy · 08/01/2014 21:25

Your diet is probably lacking in fat or an essential oil of some kind? Eat lots of nuts and avocados and take a cod liver oil supplement

Use carmex, not vaseline on your lips.

I would use a rich, soothing moisturiser, like Body Shop aloe vera night cream on my face.

Selks · 08/01/2014 21:27

Sudocrem at night. Healing and soothing.

BrownPaint · 08/01/2014 21:27

Coconut oil or Shea butter....

Confuseddd · 08/01/2014 21:28

Weleda does a range with calendula which is great for sore irritated skin. Or make your own by steeping lots of marigolds in olive oil for a few days!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/01/2014 21:31

I would use an anti-microbial like Dermol cream, and also start taking a good vitamin supplement because that crack at the corner of your mouth is nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with being run down. It shows a B vitamin deficiency in particular.

Definitely no heat, it will just dry your face out more.

Flidais · 08/01/2014 21:32

I second coconut oil. Really good stuff; relatively cheap too. My skin seemed to improve after I increased my intake of fat. Nuts/ oily fish etc.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 21:38

the vaseline is the one in a little tin, i think its meant to add moisture too? ie it's not just a pot of vaseline? i will look at one of the other ones mentioned. I have a million of them lying around as I always lose them, so have a blistex one and a burts bees one, but don't know where they are Blush

someone mentioned marigolds in a thread I have about herbal tea. She said to get the marigolds out, and I thought she meant the rubber gloves Blush Grin to go do some digging. I thought it a bit odd not to suggest normal gardening gloves...

I see now! So marigolds are the Business for all things healthy yeah? Can I grow them easily? In a pot?

I've just started using First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream on dry patches.
Tis brilliant.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 21:44

ali I am a bit run down, but always get the crack in my lip in winter. or, perhaps it's christmas Grin.

So, no real consensus on what to use, lots of different things! Apart from changing my diet a bit and adding some supplements. What food is good for vit b? i do like avocados, so maybe a chilli needs to be made.

ok, so no heat. e45 cream. is that ok on the face? I shall look at some the Burts Bees stuff as i do love it.

I have some bio oil arriving in the post. Will that help? I bought it to help with scar reduction post surgery and for uneven skin tone but might it help with hydration of the skin?

Aveeno with lavender if you can find it. The oats in the Aveeno will calm irritation and the lavender will sooth . It's ultra moisturising too.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 21:46

my skin isn't really dry. I have the oily patches that are usual for combination skin but it seems dry and oily together. I do exfoliate, but my skin is quite sensitive to touch if pulled and prodded too much so I only do this once a week. It's more sore and stingy feeling, sensitive feeling. And it looks terrible.

oh oats and lavender sounds lovely. How about if I washed with some oatmeal milk in the water, you know like for chicken pox to ease the itching? It looks lovely in the bath, I could pretend I was in a spa with some fancy milk from the gods or something.

Marigolds are quite easy to grow. You can eat the heads like salad as well apparently though haven't tried that!

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 21:51

minty I don't eat red meat, so it's possible that I am lacking in fat of some kind, but, my diet is normally quite good and it's not like I stuff my face with salad and healthy stuff in the summer or anything, as I am not a huge salad fan. I will think about my diet and see what might be lacking now that is not over the summer. Possibly less fish. Definitely lacking sunlight though...

Yes Aveeno is lovely stuff, there is an almond oil one as well which is divine.

YY to porridge bath Grin

Food - eggs and milk contain the full spectrum of VitB, and then things like whole grains, green vegetables, oats, meat and fish.

So you could make a bath of porridge and rub it into your face and eat it at the same time? Grin

Confuseddd · 08/01/2014 21:56

I would second a fish oil supplement and more avocados too.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:03

ok, I am having a porridge bath in the morning, while DH makes my porridge breakfast with milk. Avocado and brie sarnie on seedy bread for lunch methinks Grin

I have just bought a little tin of that res-q ointment by Burts Bees - not just because it's recommended by someone here for my skin, but it's a little pot of ointment for the whole family! DD and DS are always catching themselves on this or that, a little scratch or bump, so I can use it for that too!!

I have some boots points to use, so i will go look at the Aveene stuff tomorrow.

Keep them coming though, I shall be beautiful by end of Jan! well, that's probably pushing it, need a bit more than some cream to make that a miracle, but I won't look so haggard and feel so sore I hope!

Vitamin e! Buy a pot of vit. e supplements, eat some, snip one open every night and smear it on your face. You'll wake up the next morning looking different.

I started using it on my face after I'd used it on my hands to help with the gardening/stove scrapes and burns. Lingering marks have disappeared and my current burn is vanishing. It's a bit thick and icky, but it truly, honestly works.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:04

really though, my vit b levels should be ok, as I eat plenty of green veg, especially this time of year - cabbage coming out my ears as DH loves it! and I eat eggs regularly, and cheese. maybe need to eat more breakfast....

Confuseddd · 08/01/2014 22:07

I'm going to try that athelstane

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:09

athelstan wow that does sound like a miracle cure! I love the idea of waking up looking different Grin does it straighten noses and plump up the lip creases Grin get rid of eye bags? Grin

Vit e makes sense as I am outside most of the time in summer, its been so horrible and dangerous to walk locally in woods or on beaches we have hardly been out. where can i buy supplements from that are in little capsules? a particular brand? Can I get it from Amazon who I should have shares in as i am not good at going to the shops for things - I get stressed and confused by the choice and it gives me stress headache and i end up buying nothing, or I buy the wrong thing as I get scared which is why suggestions directions from you lot help as I am not swamped by a million products saying 'meee! you want meee!'

Ah. That was like a confession.
