What Can I use for dry sore skin on my face?

It's not liking the cold and wind. not helped by recent hormonal spurt when I had a rare period (implant). My face is sore and stingy, my lips are cracked in the corner, my eyes are sore. When my back is sore like this, or my feet are sore, I have a soak in the bath or a hot shower.

Does heat work? Anything else that I can use to ease the soreness? I am using vaseline every day for my lips and while they are less dry, they are a still peeling a little and the deep crack to one side bleeds when I eat (ouch).

What do you recommend - either for a day to day moisturiser, a 'routine' or some amazing anecdote of something organic that might be in my fridge that might work in an instant. I don't know, porridge and honey or something mixed in a paste with a bit of old courgette or something...

I am drinking more water/liquids. So that's not the problem.

I'd go for a good multivit every day. I take the Multibionda (sp?) one.

Also oil yourself 'from within' - avocados, nuts, seeds - check out the Linwoods flax and linseeds you can get from Sainsbos etc and get them on your porridge every morning. When I get really dry skin, I eat like this and within a week, its starts to improve.

Lastly, I second Vitamin E cream - its really transformed my face, and is brilliant to keep for helping sunburnt skin to heal (AFTER the heat has gone out of the area!), and just general skin based problems.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:15

I bought linseeds once, and didn't use them. I will get some more and add to my porridge. I make my own fruit coulis for the porridge so it will add some texture too.

Is liquid multivits better than tablets in terms of digesting/absorbing? I have on occasions in winter or following a bout of bad flu or something got a tonic, is that good/as good as a tablet?

Sudo crem is really nice overnight it heals really well then you moisturise in the morning.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:17

how about this then? Vit E and Calendula?

Maybe I will get the capsules for right this second, and the cream to use as it all gets a bit better.

I have some sudocream now actually, left over from the children's nappy rash days. i wonder if it's ok to use?

Nothing wrong with saying too much choice is ARGGGGH Grin

Capsules are just the vit. e supplements sold in Tesco, Sainbury's, Boots, Holland and Barrett etc - any old plastic tub of them will do.

If you can get over the impression you're going to bed with your face covered in honey, and just relax about it for eight hours, then your skin will feel SO much better in the morning.

I've no wish to sound like a nutter, but my hands are ten years younger than they were two weeks ago, the scars have gone, and my face has softened up hugely.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 08/01/2014 22:21

oh, and smear it on your lips too - i get ulcers if i eat too much sugar (say hello, Christmas) - and it's healed them within a couple of days, rather than over a week.

MarysDressSways · 08/01/2014 22:21

I use aveeno (lotion). Great stuff!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 08/01/2014 22:24

Dunno about your pot, Pavlov; I've just used the neat stuff out the the capsules.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:24

I am going into boots tomorrow. I can deal with a honey type complexion at bedtime if it makes me younger looking Grin

So.

I am using vit E on my face at night. I will experiment with some of the other stuff too, like Aveene as that sounds lovely and soothing. I will bathe in porridge like a queen, and eat avocados for lunch. I shall use burts bees res-q ointment or my blistex lip balm if I can find it for my cracked lips.

What about moisurising in the day time? I use Avene sensitive skin moisturiser in the mornings. Is that ok to keep with? If I am using heavy stuff at night time?

ok, I am going with the capsules, and stop being trigger happy on amazon. DH is not going to be happy when my subscribe and save order arrives at the end of the week as it is. I shall go into a real life shop for this stuff.

My skin flares up terribly and sometimes looks almost burnt and red raw. When it happens I put on sudocream before bed with a layer of Vaseline over it. So you go to bed looking like a greasy ghost but wake up with perfect skin (and a slightly greasy pillow) hth x

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2014 22:29

I am going to dig the sudocreme out now...for tonight, as I really want something to help now. It's not horrendous, just irritating me. That and my dry thinning hair. That's a whole other thread

Coo, you're going to be quite the attraction for the local wildlife Grin

I find I need very little during the day - in the morning I just use warm water and a flannel for a wash (all the vit. e has absorbed pretty much) - a tiny bit of coconut oil, and that's that.

last year I would have been terrified of this plan, as I had really oily AND flaky skin. Turns out it was only oily and flaky because I kept stripping all the oil off so it produced huge amounts more in desperation. Now I come home from work and my skin looks just as it did when I left in the morning. I wish someone had told me about this about 25 years ago...

RubyGoat · 08/01/2014 22:33

You could try Eucerin cream. I used it when I was on some medication that dried my skin terribly, my mouth was so dry it literally cracked at the corners & I couldn't eat or smile or yawn. The Eucerin is pretty thick but extremely moisturising.

PavlovtheCat · 09/01/2014 08:53

athelstane I have a stubborn greasy AND flaky patch in the middle of my eyes. It's horrible as I can't put make-up on it as it looks terrible, but need make-up on it to cover the fact it is flaky!

I have a list of all the wonderful things listed today. I am going to boots to use my points and perhaps a little more Wink. Definitely the Vit E supplements. It sounds too good to be true though Grin and also some Aveeno cream. E45 is worth us having as DH has dry skin sometimes on his hands, we did have some but run out. I can use that on my hands. And some of the other stuff I will look at too. Today is going to be a 'going mad on facial products that I might not really need' day at lunch time. Then when I get home tonight I will have a porridge bath as I didnt have one last night Grin YEY!

I have exactly the same thing. Just a bit run down generally and then had a virus over Xmas that left me with a rash, which has left me with dry skin all over face and throat - nice! I also have the crack at side of mouth which just won't heal and makes me look like I have early onset plague or something. Anyway my pharmacist recommended Eucerin too which is pricey but hopefully worth it. I usually use Aveeno in times of crisis but it has not been able to shift this. After reading this thread I am off to get linseeds and vit E caps too. Solidarity Pavlov! Smooth happy skin will be ours!

IDismyname · 09/01/2014 10:18

Pavlov - Keep the packet of linseeds in the fridge after youv'e opened them. They can go off after a while... same with nuts, too.

PavlovtheCat · 09/01/2014 18:44

I have bought a shit ton of e capsules, some aveeno cream (you didn't tell me there was a choice!!!) for hands and body, they have third off in boots at the moment. I almost bought some bath stuff and shower gel by aveeno too, but resisted temptation, almost got distracted by the eucerina stuff which is well expensive and didn't know what to buy, so luckily my stress head stopped me from spending too much and found myself mesmerised by the skin, hair and nail multivitamins, but resisted the urge and stuck tommy plan! I found my blister lip balm and lips feel better already. Can't find my Burt's bees but resisted temptation to buy more...I did buy some special offer mascara though, and got some boots vouchers for money off no.7 and I do love their shower gel...

donttelalfred I was tempted to do a before photo and an after two weeks photo... Maybe not of my whole face, but a section. But think not now! Solidarity! tell me how your transformation works! Sorry to hear you have been poorly too, viruses are horrible and wipe all your health, winter is a bad tbc to suffer.

PavlovtheCat · 09/01/2014 18:45

Not bought the linseed yet though. DH has agreed we all need to eat porridge in the mornings as he feels a bit rundown too. He is probably going to take advantage of my research Grin

PavlovtheCat · 10/01/2014 15:06

I did it! I smothered my face with the honey-like vit e gloop! I didn't wake up as a different person Sad but my skin did feel much better! Soft, less angry. DH said my skin looked brighter but I think he felt compelled to say something positive or else be hit over the head as he didn't even notice I had it smeared over my face last night!

My make-up went on more smoothly as well. I am impressed. I think a few more days of this and I will be super made over! Do I do this every day? or every other day or once a week?

the aveeno has not turned my hands into super soft hands of a twenty something who has never washed up either. But, again, less sore.

And, I can smile without the crack bleeding after two days of using my blister lip balm, followed by some vit e last night.

YEY! On the negative side. I have drank hardly any water today and drank a double espresso filled latte...Hmm

AthelstaneTheUnready · 10/01/2014 20:15

Hoorah! Grin

Vit e. is fantastic for healing and sorts of lumps and bumps and irritations.

I think when I started I was so over the moon that I used it every night for a couple of weeks, and my skin just got better and better and better. Probably about once every other/third night now.

I am really pleased you tried it - a lot more water will definitely make a difference if you're not actually drinking any... Wink

Franchini · 10/01/2014 20:30

Try taking berrocca for the vitamins. Sudocreme works wonders on my sore nose when I have a cold. But for your face try diprobase cream from the pharmacy it's about £2·50 and I use it when my daughters eczema flares up on her face. Don't whatever you do use E45 cream as it contains lanolin and can make things much worse!

donttellalfred · 11/01/2014 08:28

I am so dim that I bought vit e capsules containing powder not oil. In my defence you can't tell from the bottle. They cost £7 too. Anyone want some expensive vitamin e powder? Grin

donttellalfred · 11/01/2014 08:29

Or maybe I could snort it?
