Skincare for scalp with chemo hairloss

Hi there, I've just finished my first round of treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Most of my hair fell out so I got rid of the stragglers but still have some bristles. But the skin on my scalp is getting very dry and flaky.

Is the best approach to just use the same moisturiser I'm using on my face (E45 following allergic reaction swelling and very dry distressed skin)?
Has anyone else had this and if so what did you use? I've just been using water or a little very gentle body wash foam on my head so far.

I've just finished chemo and didn't lose all of my hair but I went on a look good feel better session and they suggested you use the same moisturiser on your head as your face. The session was really good by the way I'd recommend if if you haven't been on one. Good luck with everything hope you don't feel too bad with the chemo

Hi, the E45 will be fine especially as you know you aren't allergic to it.

In terms of washing I'd suggest something non-foaming as it's the foam that often dries your skin out. If you look for something claiming to be soap-free and ideally SLS-free that will be perfect. E45 do a shower gel as do all the other dry skin/eczema ranges you'll find in a pharmacist. If you want something less medicinal looking and more luxurious, the organic type ranges are often SLS-free. Waitrose usually has some choice, Tesco usually nothing. Beware anything claiming to be gentle or moisturising or conatining moisturising cream (yes, I mean you Dove) as if they have soap and SLS they will dry your skin regardless.

Best wishes, chemo for AML is brutal.

Hello Dashing my son lost all his hair (head and body) when he went through chemo (for a brain tumour). His skin was desperately dry all over (I could peel his feet) and hospital advised E45 cream and shower gel as his skin was very sensitive. I also bought him pure silk pillow cases as it was very gentle on his scalp.

I hope that the remainder of your treatment is gentle on you.

Thank you everyone for your advice - I think I will go for the E45 shower stuff as well. My skin is really struggling to return to normal after all the swelling that went with the allergic reaction. Incredibly dry and wrinkled all over.

minmooch My best friend bought me a lovely soft cotton nightcap (think Wee Willie Winkie!) that I use at night and I might also get a trendier one from suburban turban - I've got some of their scarves and love that look.

Thank you again, I knew I could rely on MNers!
