Any gynaecologists or specialist nurses around?

My period came a week early and I've bled for 13 days and counting. I'm 40. Normally last 5 days, cycle has been closer together over last year. Mum had early menopause. Went to A&E today, abdo exam normal, HCG levels low so not pregnant, didn't do pelvic exam or ultrasound. I've not had a smear for 5 years. Mostly dark brown discharge now with some 'bits', reminded me of when I bled while pregnant with DD. Pulse was 120 although ECG normal and no fever. They don't think it's ectopic as HCG neg. no bleeding in between cycles sex not painful. Any thoughts-am worried sick and might get a private gynae appointment to get an urgent scan and smear.

I had my last period at 40.

From the age of 38, periods were more frequent, often starting another as soon as one had finished.

What made you go to A&E?

Your GP is the place to go with those symptoms NOT A&E. GP can sort you out with smear and scan and refer you on to gynaecologist. My guess is that whatever you have it isn't going to be life threatening, it has been uterine polyps in my case, I'm waiting for a date to have one taken out now.

Thanks. GP was closed at midday and I was worried about palpitations and risk of ectopic so I don't think unreasonable to go to A&E and neither did the doctor there. But thanks for the lecture

I'm no expert but I know there's a kind of pre menopause where things go a bit strange before the proper menopause.

The fact your mum had an early menopause makes it more likely for you.

All the women in my family went through menopause in late 30s or early 40s.

I realise the palpitations worried you but they can be a symptom too.
