Can any dental experts tell me what an infection would look like on an x-ray?

I have had toothache for several weeks. The dentist gave me antibiotics but isn't really sure what the problem is so sent me to the hospital for an x-ray. I will take it back to the dentist but in the meantime can anyone tell me if an infection would look dark or light on the x-ray. The dentist thought I might have a crack in my tooth but I can't see anything. Would that show up on an x-ray?

I'm not an expert but having just been to the dentist with an infection, it looks like a shadow around the root of your tooth. If you do a google image search for dental xrays and abscess you can see.
