Could DD (8) have a migraine?

She is sensative to light, feels sick & her "whole face hurts"

I have had a few (maybe 6) but mine were a bit different

Is there anything I can do to help her (apart from Calpol)

She gets worse if she moves

I think I had my first migraines around that age - I didn't have a name for them though, just called them 'sick headaches'

poor thing. Do keep a really close eye on her though just in case it's a symptom of something else, especially the sensitivity to light. Does she say it's one sided at all? - many migraines are

to help - lots of water,even if she's chucking it up, because dehydration will make a headache worse. also maybe it's been triggered by the weather if it feels as though a storm is on it's way - the face hurting could be sinuses are well. I often get headaches triggered by atmospheric changes.

and apart from that the same things as for adults - dark room, something cool on her forehead etc. a painkiller that reduce inflamation, e.g. Calprofen, might help more, but I'm not experience in kids health AT ALL, just my own migraines

she may also feel very washed out for a good day or two once it's finally gone, so keep her quiet, no eye strain and plenty of fluids

katy, that does sound grim for her, poor girl.

It could be a migraine, that's how I felt when I had one but I always got visual disturbances first lasting about half an hour;

If I were you I would phone NHS direct for advice, they may be able to recommend something stronger to help her - sounds like she needs something more asap.

Is she feverish at all? Is it possible it could be a virus?

If you get any more worried about her, or if NHS direct take hours to phone you back just phone your surgery emergency number, just run it past them.

i've been getting migraines for as long as i can remember... since i was a baby really.

the main signs are; severe pain, usually at one side that gets worse with movement; exteme sensitivity to light, sound and smell; nausea and vomiting.

calpol is pretty usless tbh, if you have neurofen for kids it might be better but that said no pain relief ever worked for me, the only way i could cope was to lie very still in a dark room and try to sleep til it went away, 12 hours sleep usually did the trick.

I used to get migraines at that age. I had about one a month from the age of about 7 to 12. Luckily I don't get them so often any more. My hv told my mum it was because I was such an active child. I was getting home from school, having a quick snack for tea then going out to an active club. I use loads of energy then go straight to bed. She told my mum to let me have 2 biscuits before bed to boost my sugar levels. It acvtually worked really well.

Thank you - her head still hurt when she woke - but it got better after a couple of hours....she'e full of energy now
