Question about impetigo

My ds6 has just been diagnosed with it.

I feel so bad as at first I thought it was a small rash and took me 3 days to go to the doctors he had been at school the whole time as well, I had never even heard of it or seen anyone with it before.

My question, I have been given anti-biotics and fucidin cream to apply to the area, its just that one of my sons nostrols is completeled close with the scabs/bogeys (sorry!) do I just apply the cream to what I can see, or do I need to pick anything off to apply, I should have asked doctor but was too busy thinking about rushing to the chemist who were closing in 5 mins.

My insticts are always never to pick a scab, but someone said I might but didn't seem that convinced so thought I would ask.

wipe getnly with a moist baby wipe first to see if anything 'lifts up' at all, adn then just put cream on. If nothing does actually come away before hand, the cream itself will soften up the scabs some so will be able to from next application.

HTH

Oh, and don't worry about him having been at school.....tis very hard to know when it is just a simple sore and when it is actually impetigo, so as long as you keep him home now and just infor te school then all should be fine (altho, has he not broken up now for the summer??).

Impetigo BTW does actually heal up fast once you start applying the cream, so by monday he will be looking lots better. You just have to try and make sure he doesn't pick at it as that is how it can start to spread!

Many thanks, he woke up at 4 am for a drink so I managed to get another dose of his medicine down him.

ok another question lol

just gone to put on his lunctime cream, used the wet wipe and without much hesitation all the scabs came off, now i have reapplied the cream, my question is do I keep reapplying until it disappears or is the job of the cream to loosen the scabs.

my dd, who is 3 has got this. it took me ages to take her to dr because it started off looking like eczema... felt awful when it suddenly got worse. having got med and cream yesterday it is alreday starting to get better.

mears · 22/07/2006 12:36

The cream is to treat it and should be used for at least 7 days. Does it not have directions on the tube?

april74 · 22/07/2006 12:42

nope leaflet says follow doctors instructions, and the tube just said use 3 times a day, didn't say how long for, but i will do it for a week. thanks
