Hysterectomies - it's gotta be done but over here for hand holding part two

Over here for the hand holding.
One in five women in the uk will have to have a hysterectomy at some point in their lives.
Come and join us if you are waiting, pre op, bleery eyed on the ward or recovering afterwards.

OP posts:

lack what an awful time you will be having. I still remember the wait for the results. It was awful and I didn't have to wait very long at all. Just focus on the word "possible"

twinkle are you ok? Did you have to stay in hospital for your second procedure? How are you doing?

ginge I think you are doing the right thing. You could end up having all sorts of treatments that don't work, and then end up having to have the hysterectomy anyway. Get it over and done with.

rhonda That doesn't sound right. She needs to get it checked out and be persistent. Has she already done so?

Basketofchocolate · 25/02/2014 11:30

Hi, have my op booked for Monday....

What have I forgotten?

What are the leg exercises that the leaflet refers to but doesn't tell me about?

When will I feel able to supervise DS when home from school so DH can carry on working at home?

dopamax · 25/02/2014 12:51

hi, joining in as saw dr last night and going to have my bits all out, Im 48 and suffering so hope it will ease things, getting it done hopefully through the belly button? worried about recovery time as Im a single mum of 3 with no other support!!

Basketofchocolate · 25/02/2014 16:32

Hi Dopamax

Lacking some support here, but only 1 DS and have a DH, so can't complain. Just worried about DH not being able to work as will need to do school run, etc.

Crutchlow35 · 25/02/2014 17:50

I am almost as a year since I had my hysterectomy done abdominally.

You want to know how quickly you will be up and about? That just all depends.

I made sure I was fitter for my surgery. I also went into it feeling strong and positive. When I got home I felt strong and positive. I think if you have a positive attitude it will really help with your recovery. I was driving (with gp permission) at 3 weeks and back at work at 6. I do wish I had taken 8 weeks though. On reflection, I should have had a couple of weeks just getting back to normal where as I had 6 weeks recovering and straight into work.

On the hystectomy forums there were people who had surgery at the same time as me but were early struggling at 6 weeks with basic tasks whereas I was back at work.

I had a couple of scares after surgery but I tried really hard to remain focused. I made sure I went outside every day, even if it was to the front gate and back. I made sure I was up and dressed albeit in joggers and I had a shower every day. I made sure I did this before 8 am as it really is too easy to sit or lie in bed.

It has been the best year though. No bleeding, saved a fortune in sanitary wear and I worse white trousers in the summer.

Basketofchocolate · 25/02/2014 18:05

Crutch- thanks, that's good to hear. I planned to get fitter before surgery, but in the end have only had a few weeks between appt and surgery date. Trying to concentrate on being positive and not worrying too much. Feel like if I'm prepared, then I will be able to focus on getting better.

Am a bit of a rubbish patient and after a previous stint of CFS, I am always nervous of being ill and sitting around. I like your idea of getting up and dressed every day but since I have a 5yr old, I know I need to make sure I look ill enough to stop him playing rough with me until I can handle it Smile

Crutchlow35 · 25/02/2014 18:22

DS was 4.5 when I had my surgery done. I was completely honest with him. Told him I was having an operation on my tummy. Let him see my staples when I got home and he watched the nurse take them out when she came to the house. He learnt that way that I couldn't do the things that we had been doing before and that I needed to be careful.

I also just want to add to my comments above. Just because some people on other forums were struggling when I was back at work doesn't mean that they should have been doing the same, I just think it shows that everyone is different and recovery times are different but I am convinced that a positive attitude helps!

Basketofchocolate · 25/02/2014 20:27

Yes, I know everyone is different, bodies are all different and I think the interpretation of 'doing stuff' is different for everyone too.

Just good to get an idea about what's possible.

gingeme · 25/02/2014 23:18

Hi all. I got a letter with my date for my biopsy today so I rang to Cancel it and tell lady I would like a hysterectomy instead please ? The nice lady said yes ofcourse. She will let them know and Ill get a letter with an appt with the gyneocologist Confused

Twinkletights · 26/02/2014 08:51

Hello ladies and welcome to the new ladies.
Still in hospital but going home this morning. This one has been incredibly painful and I am not looking forward to the 40 minute car journey home when I can't sit down. Back later x

fitflopqueen · 26/02/2014 22:51

Twinkle, wondered how your op went sounds like the first one was a breeze in comparison. Hope you are more comfortable now you are home x

Twinkletights · 27/02/2014 08:56

Thank you fitflop am very glad to be home. This has been so much more painful than the keyhole hysterectomy. I am still in bed dosed up on pain relief. I was warned that it would be very painful but no pain no gain and I know that it is worth it!

How is everyone else doing? Sorry that you have yet more waiting lackadaisy

Basketofchocolate · 27/02/2014 09:26

So, if op on Monday, am I basically going to be asleep most of next week?

Twinkletights · 27/02/2014 09:43

Basket what are you having done?

I am not the best advert right now due to having two lots of surgery in the last five weeks so am very wiped out right now. I felt a lot better after the hysterectomy than I do now.

Please ask any questions that you have, the waiting is the worst bit.

Basketofchocolate · 27/02/2014 17:03

Twinks = Hyst & repairs via internal.

I missed the reason you had the second lot of surgery. Not sure I want to if a scary story Confused

Basketofchocolate · 27/02/2014 17:04

Hardest bit is trying to plan for childcare cover and knowing when can work again atm. Not sure what to plan for to help DH/DS next week

shewhowines · 27/02/2014 17:32

I was doing light cooking and stuff by day 10, but really you probably need at least 3 weeks of doing very little. And no ironing, hoovering or lifting for longer. You will build up the walking. I stopped shuffling after about 2 weeks but couldn't walk far or fast, for much longer.

shewhowines · 27/02/2014 17:51

twinkle hope your recovery is quick. It sounds really grim.

gingeme · 27/02/2014 18:25

Oh twinkle Thanks hope your on the mend real soon x
Can I ask a question please ? If I have a full hysterectomy do they take away your cervix too ?
I feel like crap at the mo after bleeding from Christmas through most of Jan stopping at the start of March my body now feels like its gearing up for a period Hmm which reminds me exactly why I want this op Sad

shewhowines · 27/02/2014 18:36

Yes they take the cervix.

gingeme · 27/02/2014 18:40

So they leave a big hole !!

shewhowines · 27/02/2014 18:41

Yup Grin

gingeme · 27/02/2014 18:58
Shock
Basketofchocolate · 27/02/2014 19:09

Shewhowines - that's good to hear - three of my least favourite forms of entertainment :)

Was thinking need to do serious resting the first two weeks then start to build up in week three - does that sound likely?

If I'm able to sit with DS while he does homework, etc. in week 2, that would be good but I am preparing DS for me not doing any household chores at all.

shewhowines · 27/02/2014 19:31

Yes but a very slow build up, and be prepared for one step forward, two steps back. Some days you feel better than others. Push yourself but be careful not to overdo it. Rest and rest some more

I think I recovered well and relatively quickly, compared to some, but I was fit and healthy beforehand if you ignore the symptomless cervical cancer
