Dangerously bad PMT - help please

PetitFilou1 · 17/07/2006 22:13

Have discovered I have appalling PMT since I had an IUD put in (prior to ds and dd was on the pill for 15 years so wasn't having 'real' periods). I am talking terrible mood swings, inability to control my temper and aggressive irrational behaviour. I have been close to hitting my children (2.5 and 10 months). My dh knows my period is on its way well before I do. Can anyone offer any advice? I am really scared I might do something really bad although have not spoken to the GP yet.

i think someone suggested extra stength primrose oil, i'll have to see if i can find the thread. i get really bad pmt since having the coil as well, it's horrible

Oh god so glad I found this thread, was nearly divorce in my house this weekend then AF arrived and dh said no wonder. I thought they were meant to get slightly better with a coil? Is it a mirena you have? I had mine inserted in Feb and this is the first bad one.

Yes I agree with the eve. prim, and I think a vit B complex, I'll try to find out too.

Glad to find it's not just me.

Have you tried vit B12 and evening primrose oil?
I was recommended these by my gp for my horrendous(sp)PMT. They did have a positive impact until I felt well enough to forget to take them

Pollyanna · 18/07/2006 14:21

an article I have read recently suggests Agnus Castus. And also avoiding sugar, which apparently makes pmt much worse. I sympathise with you, since my periods came back after dd3 was born, I have had horrendous pmt.

TicTacsMum · 18/07/2006 20:56

Me too! Anyone know if you can take evening primrose and vit b12 while breastfeeding?

BudaBabe · 19/07/2006 06:15

I found acupunture great for PMS.

festiveface · 19/07/2006 13:45

i have been taking magnesium - ok from boots and i have had one period since starting it and i found my pmt to be much less. i will see how i am the next time though before i am convinced.
i have tried loads of things. primrose oil didn't work for me at all.

I have read that it is the GLA in the oil that helps and that Starflower oil has a higher percentage. It used to help before DD, but does not seem so good now although I do give in to sugar cravings which reading here is not helping!
