Throat lined with razor blades - doctor?

I have a really bad sore throat, waaaaay worse than I have ever had before, even worse than after I had my tonsils out. I'm having to brace myself before I can swallow my spit, and tbh sometimes I'm just dribbling it into a hanky to avoid the pain Confused

Although I'm feeling sorry for myself and making life hell for the people around me I was just using OTC stuff, but it's not even touching it! Even the extra strong strepsils make absolutely no difference! I can't sleep (hence writing this now!)

All the packets say go to the doctor if it's severe or it lasts more than 2 days. It's been this bad now since Thursday evening. Do I need to go? Can they do anything? My glands are all up but I don't have tonsils so it's not tonsillitis!

Sorry, that's longer than a sore throat warrants!

Also not sleeping due to crappy cold and sore throat...

If it's no better on Monday morning then might be an idea to get it checked out. If it's an infection rather than virus they'll be able to give you something. I had a proper throat infection a while back and when I eventually listened to DH and went to doctors I ended up on antibiotics to shift it.

No idea if it actually works, but I've been told that gargling warm salt water can sooth sore throats.

Do you have a temp? Feeling hot and cold? If so, get to GP. You don't need to suffer like this, you have done the right thing and tried to deal with it at home, you don't need to feel bad about seeing the GP today. I have found some relief from gargling with diluted TCP (be sure to spit it out afterwards though!), wont kill a bacterial infection, but helps soothe it a bit!

GoshAnneGorilla · 08/12/2013 06:49

By all means get it checked out.

However the best thing for a sore throat is to gargle then swallow soluble aspirin. Not the nicest thing to do in the world, but it's far better for the pain then Strepsils.

ShriekingGnawer · 08/12/2013 06:50

You can have an equivalent to tonsillitis though. Any pus?

imip · 08/12/2013 06:54

Yeah, go to the drs. I had this on holiday in oz and the dr chastised me for not going to see her sooner. I was very sick, fever and chills.

Rosa · 08/12/2013 07:10

I would go, even if its since Thursday if nothing is touching it then it sounds severe .

VikingLady · 08/12/2013 07:19

Thank you. Fever and chills too, plus coughing up yuck too. Can't do the aspirin thing as still bf! Have tried salt water and tcp (separately!) but didn't help.

Will do emergency dr if no better by lunchtime. Thanks again.

Sanity sorry you are suffering too!

Shrieking what would the equivalent be? I do have the breath that goes with tonsillitis

sykadelic15 · 08/12/2013 07:43

Pharyngitis? I used to get one or the other every other month.

sanityawol · 08/12/2013 07:50

Viking I'm just feeling sorry for myself through lack of sleep! It's just a cold.

With the extra info... go to the bloody doctors today if you can. Smile

ShriekingGnawer · 08/12/2013 07:54

Pharyngitis or infection in the part of your throat where the tonsils were. I've had it a few times since having my tonsils out and the GP just said 'if you had tonsils this would tonsillitis'. Covonia throat spray is excellent but don't know if it's okay while bf. you can get soluble paracetamol.

ShriekingGnawer · 08/12/2013 07:55

Fever and bad breath would definitely indicate infection.

VikingLady · 08/12/2013 09:01

Thanks. Emergency appt at 10.30

How are you feeling?

VikingLady · 08/12/2013 15:57

Pants, but thanks for asking! Doctor was useless, didn't look at my throat but pronounced it viral based on the season, therefore no abs. I wanted to ask about some abs I was prescribed a few days ago for cystitis but aren't bf friendly, and he wouldn't help as it isn't what I booked for!

Receptionist got me in for a second opinion and have amoxicillin to cover both problems.

So thanks everyone for telling me to go!

Slightly ridiculous not to look at your throat! Hope amoxicillin works quickly. Sip hot black currant and honey too.

harrap · 08/12/2013 21:26

When I last had a terribly sore throat it turned out it was a symptom glandular fever so maybe go back to GP and ask for a blood test.

Ememem84 · 08/12/2013 22:18

Hot honey & lemon. Will sooth throat. Go to drs though. I used to get this a lot. Not fun. Get someone to make you a tea.
