Tea tree oil works best for me. It stinks a bit but worth it. Just dab it on every hour or so and the majority if times it never amounts to a full blown sore.

plum100 · 02/12/2013 09:17

Thanks strawberries - can i get that from a chemist x

Yes most chemists and supermarkets will stock it. It's in a tiny bottle like essential oils. It really does smell my DH boaks when I use it but its worth it.

My mum swears by anti bacterial hand gel, the stuff that comes in little pocket sized squeezy bottles. It dries them right up and kills the infection. Also, cold compress before bed, but don't let it get soggy.

Have had success with Zovirax etc at that early "tingle" stage - put it on every hour until bedtime and you might be lucky.

nipersvest · 02/12/2013 09:59

compeed, since i started using them my coldsores are much smaller than they used to be and go after a couple of days. i keep them in my bag all the time.

Cathycat · 02/12/2013 11:16

Undiluted tea tree oil x

christmas2excited · 02/12/2013 13:43

plum - the cold compress, my mum gets an ice cube in a little sandwich bag (to waterproof it) and then wraps it in tissue and holds it on her cold sores. She says it reduces swelling.

christmas2excited · 02/12/2013 13:43

oh, and stops the coldsore getting soggy. so both really!

kawaii · 02/12/2013 13:48

Ice the area. Then if it turns into a blister dab with hydrogen peroxide. Keep it covered with a compeed patch during the day. I've been plagued with these for years and this works the best for me.

tracypenisbeaker · 02/12/2013 13:51

eau de parfum. stings like a bitch but it works for me

KatoPotatoHoHo · 02/12/2013 14:01

Compeed patches, and if you have a sympathetic GP some Aciclovir tablets!

plum100 · 02/12/2013 15:27

Thanks all - have got the tea tree oil and have been putting it on hourly, the tinglin has stopped but i can see the blisters forming - also bought compees for tonight x

nail varnish removed helped get rid of a cold sore for me, dab it on a few times a day with a cotton bud - the acetone helps dry them out

plum100 · 02/12/2013 19:12

Chips does that not hurt

LEMisafucker · 02/12/2013 19:15

Piss on it!

madamecake · 02/12/2013 19:18

I swear by boots own cold sore lotion. It's great at drying out the blisters once they've started. Good luck, I hope it heals quickly!

Dollydowser · 02/12/2013 19:21

Lysine, its stops the virus replicating. Take 3 a day until its gone.
