But am now reading on net it is 14... That is half a bottle of wine 3 times a week, right? OMG, have been drinking 21-ish a week and feeling virtuous! Time to cut down???

No the govt upped the guidance to 21. But it should be noted that it is not a weekly limit but a daily one - so 3 units a day maximum. (In other words, it's not all right to have 6 one night 4 another, 1 another and 5 another - you should only ever have 3. But in the RW let's face it, how many people stick to this?) They also say you should have at least one alcohol free day per week and better, at least 2.

However most alcohol guidance has completely ignored the govt's new(ish - they're at least 4 or 5 years old now) guidelines and still quote the old ones.

what's 3 units - about 175ml glass of win?

A unit is a small glass of wine or half a pint of beer, I think (unless you are cheating and having one of those incredibly strong Belgian beers...)

winnie · 14/07/2006 15:32

A unit is a 125ml glass of wine most measures now are 175mls or 250mls! Also it is based on wine having being much less than the average 12-15% vol it now is. I was very alarmed when I realised this as I thought I was being ok but am now realising I am drinking far too much.

Read this week that 1/2 bottle of chablis every night = 35 units a week which frankly equals liver damage.

As a nation I think we are very ill educated about alcohol

LeahE · 14/07/2006 15:45

You can get 250ml glasses of wine now? I've been out of the going-out-to-bars scene for too long...

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/07/2006 15:49

I always thought it was 14.

Did they up it when they announced 24 hour opening? - how convenient!

The bog standard white I have in my fridge is 1.5 units per 125 ml glass. So two teeny glasses is my daily limit used up

i don't bother w/all that units crap. takes the fun outta drinking and i just end up binging if i start counting.

like counting calories.

using common sense works better and is easier, too.

I went to post this ages ago and it didn't get through and then I got distracted but I spent ages looking for it all soooo:

1 unit is one small (125ml) glass of weak white wine like hock - 9% stuff. A large glass (175ml) of 12% red = 2 units, 14% = 2.5 units.

A really large glass (250ml) of 14-15% red is nearly 4 units

DD1 was really shocked the other day to find a pub that only offered wine at 175ml or 250ml and checked with Trading Standards to see if it was OK (not to offer 125ml glasses I mean) and they said it was.

noddyholder · 14/07/2006 16:09

2 small 1970's style wine glasses is the absolute max per day. Those big ones in pubs and restaurants are all you should be having -just one!!!

Mercy · 14/07/2006 16:10

A couple of years ago I went to a pub and ordered a large glass of wine. I might as well have asked for half a pint of wine, the glass was huge!

I wonder what the guidlines are in France.

Happy Bastille Day!

Everything in moderation, is how I feel. I know when I'm having too much and stop.
