We were given a little polythene bag thingy to put in dd's nappy. She was younger than your dd but those plastic pots were almost impossible to catch anything with.

zephyrcat · 14/07/2006 10:18

Some surgeries can give you a special nappy if you ask - although why they don't just give it as standard amazes me!

JessaJam · 14/07/2006 10:28

have images of wringing a nappy out over small plastic collection pot...!

sylvm · 14/07/2006 10:37

We had the same thing when DD2 was little and paediatrician wanted to run urine tests. As the other posters have said, there is a thing to go inside the nappy which kind of sticks on - trouble is we found it didn't stick on very well. Eventually by fluke DD sat on the potty and did a wee on morning, so I rushed it off - she wasn't toilet trained for years after that, but I was just lucky. These Drs have no idea sometimes .... good luck - I don't envy you!

Enid · 14/07/2006 10:39

I did it by putting a dora video on and standing a potty underneath her while she was standing holding the coffee table

DumbledoresGirl · 14/07/2006 10:40

I have experience of doing this with and without a special nappy bag.

You give the child a drink and they should wee about 20 minutes later so you sit there, with the child nappyless and wait for it to happen.

In your case, though, I am not sure you will get anything if your dd is dehydrated. Will she be able to keep the drink down even?

If all else fails by tonight, I would ring the GP and ask them to tell you how to do it.

me23 · 14/07/2006 10:40

lol thanks everyone looks like I have an impossible task on my hands!
Jessajam come mondaY morning I will probably have resorted to wringing out the nappY

I too was given a little bag that had a sticky seal that you could basically put on them and put the nappy on. Usually get enough to do a sample. Obviously easier on a boy.

If you can't by doing the potty - I would just contact the surgery and ask for one of those collection bags.

milge · 14/07/2006 11:09

I was given those collection bags, but they made dd very sore and the wee escaaped out of the back. so I did the same as Enid - gave dd a big drink and 15 mins later sat holding her upright on a potty until she did a wee - took about another 15 mins iirc. A complete PITA.

pippo · 14/07/2006 11:09

Just a thought, but could you try putting cotton wool in the nappy and wringing that out? A bit gross but might work????

LaDiDaDi · 14/07/2006 13:03

In my area they give you special pads to stick inside the nappy. They are like very basic, very old fashioned sanitary towels with no absorbent gel or secent etc to them. You also get a syringe and a pot. You put the injecting end of the syringe pushed down hard into the pad and then pull vigorously with the plunger. Hey presto sterile urine sample in syringe that you then squirt into pot.

BUT tbh if your gp really suspects a urine infection then you need to give them the sample asap, waiting til Monday is no use.

Nemo1977 · 14/07/2006 13:15

have used both sitting with bottomless babe with pot, the stick on bags which are hard to remove without spilling, and a tube with funnel bit to cover girls bits...all fun

me23 · 14/07/2006 16:54

thanks all, dd has been asleep on and off all daY, she has temp and is irritable, she cant stand on her own Yet and i dont have a potty, havent managed to get sample Yet. Am thinking it is a uti as her she smells a bit down there.
if the doctor said to wait till mondaY than it must be ok right? i mean it isnt an emergencY is it?

we did this with ds took ages to get one - just had him naked with sterile pot. hope shes ok - if your worried go back to docs - i think they can get quite ill with uti

LaDiDaDi · 14/07/2006 17:28

Don't want to worry you anymore than you already are but an untreated uti can be serious in a little one. Adults (and GPs) sometimes think it's just like when we get cystitis but it's not. I think how urgently you need to get your los urine sample done depends upon how she is in general, temp not settling with calpol and brufen, irritable and lethargic etc would make me want to get it sorted before monday tbh. Best of luck and hope she gets better soon.
