I have the worst burn on the roof of my mouth. It's agony.

Burnt the roof of my mouth on a thermonuclear roasted potato. It blistered, and then the blister peeled. It seemed pretty big. That was bad enough (last Thursday) but since the weekend it's been utter agony. When I cautiously explore with my tongue hissing in pain, I can feel pits in the roof of my mouth and it feels shredded. It is getting better, by infinitesimal amounts, every day, but it's awful. Eating and drinking is torture, or I look like I have awful manners, trying to avoid getting any food on the left side of my palate.

We're on holiday quite far away, so I can't go see dentist or GP, which would seem sort of pointless anyway :( - it's just a mouth burn, it'll heal eventually... but is there anything I could do to speed it up?

Gargling with saltwater might help. You poor thing, you can't enjoy any food etc when your mouth is that sore Confused

go to a chemist
something like difflam mouth rinse might be suitable. its got local anaesthetic in it.
and OuchSad

We are on holiday and I haven't done enough exploring to find a chemist yet.
Will try salt water.

Ow ow ow :(

You poor thing - sounds horrid! Could it have turned into a mouth ulcer? I quite often get them after burning my tongue or biting inside of my cheek etc. - they are very painful and in my experience can spread too. I use anbesol which has an anaesthetic so it numbs it - for a bit at least - you can get it in gel or liquid form from any pharmacy. Really hope it gets better soon!

Jacksmania · 27/11/2013 06:58

I don't know - never had one but that sounds quite awful.

My mum found something in the little market across the street from our hotel, it's called Rincinol, it's supposed to coat mouth sores and burns etc - never heard of it but will give it a try.

I wouldn't use salt on it...will sting!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/11/2013 07:25

What a shame this happened on holiday :(

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 27/11/2013 07:53

The salt doesn't sting at all - it's very soothing and speeds up healing. You dilute it well with water. Smile

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/11/2013 08:29

Surely it would sting if there is any open wound..was my thinking?

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 27/11/2013 09:37

No it honestly doesn't. It's one of the oldest, gentlest remedies around.

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 27/11/2013 09:38

You're not rubbing salt in a wound or anything! It's extremely gentle when diluted in just warm water.

Jacksmania · 27/11/2013 13:35

I tried the salt water but the taste was incredibly foul [boak]Envy. But the Rincinol stuff I got seems to be helping. The wound feels less shredded and smaller this morning.

It's not keeping me from enjoying tropical frothy drinks :o but I'm staying away from a lovely West Indian Curry I've been wanting to try :(
Hopefully not much longer. It happened the day before we left home to travel to my parents' - we spent two days with them before we all traveled here together. If I'd had any brains I'd have gotten some stuff at theirs but it didn't seem so bad at first, and got progressively worse once all the shops were closed, my luck.

Would hydrogen peroxide help, do you think? I think I saw some in the little market across from our hotel.

Yeouch. No I wouldn't Jacks.

Jacksmania · 27/11/2013 17:10

No, probably not. The fruit salad I just scoured it with hurt enough. Bloody hell. I'm going to be reduced to eating apple sauce and drinking copious amounts of wine to numb the pain.

Glad it's starting to heal anyway :)
