Right boob killing me but left boob fine!

Anyone here with experience of weird breast problems? I have had this on and off for about 18 months now; random times when my right breast really aches/tender/deep burning. The breast itself doesn't look or feel any different, no thickening that I can feel but the whole boob feels a little bit 'fuller' (to me). Also sore when I lean against something (chest wall?)

About 2 months in to this (16 months ago) I saw the top consultant in my county as I was terrified of inflammatory bc. She really did a thorough consultation, looking at me while I did arm waving exercises, full physical exam, ultrasound, mammogram, all clear. She does all the surgery in my county so she must know what to look for?

I am taking a high dose of evening primrose oil. If it was hormonal why would it only affect one side? I am 39.

Grateful for any thoughts! It hasnt got worse, just waxes and wanes.

I've had intermittent, waxing/waning boob and chest wall pain for years (am now 53, it started in my late 30s).

Probably hormonal, often one sided. Boobs (and hormones, and human beings!) are funny things Smile

I have a sharp one sided pain right now - not a lot of hormones left, but it still happens. I might have costochondriasis as well, which is often confused with boob pain (inflammation of tiny joints between sternum and ribs).

I am on ibuprofen which really helps, and took 2 evening primrose high dose tablets yesterday!

I have thought about going back for another check up, but I can't really report anything different. I know they'll ask if anythings changed - lumps, nipple discharge etc, but it hasn't. Presumably if it was serious it would have progressed over 18 months?

Yes, it would have Smile

If ibuprofen helps, you may well have what I have - the irritated teeny joints.

Millenniumbug1 · 10/11/2013 18:51

Go to your Dr, it could be something like duct ectasia, but it could be something more serious; however unlikely something serious is, it's worth ruling it out. Good luck Thanks

She's already seen a consultant for this, Millenium.

Though if you're still worried, OP, see her again for peace of mind?? Though if it's the exact same symptoms, no worse, I would bet my non-medically trained butt you'll get the same answers Smile

zazzabeans · 10/11/2013 21:27

hiya, I have been exactly where you are, except mine was in my left breast, went on for about 3 month, seen lots of doctors, even paid to see a homeopathist, had an ultrasound in the end- all fine, just one of those things, one sided breast pain is relatively common .... mine has now went . I also found evening primrose helped me (as did the medication from the homeopathist)

Worriedkat · 10/11/2013 21:44

Same symptoms, started May 2012 for about 2 months, went completely, back again June 2013 for a month, went, now back again Nov 13! Eve primrose does seem to work, it just confuses me why it's only one side...

What is duct eplasia?

I'll go back if it gets much worse or something else happens. I tend to get branded with being anxious by the medics as my mum died of bc about 5 years ago, but it's not anxiety (the tenderness sometimes wakes me up if I lie on it wrong).

I was seen by breast clinic with symptoms a couple of years ago & given the all clear & a diagnoses of Tietzes, although I had it for many years before that & didn't know what it was.
Tietze can feel as if its 'in' your breast but if you lean forward (getting the boob out of the way) and push on your ribs you should be able to decide if the pain is coming from your breast or ribs/chest wall.
My mum & sister had bc so I tend to worry.

Worriedkat · 23/11/2013 17:18

I do find it very uncomfortable to lie down on my front. Could tietzes affect one side only?

Very sore if say one of my kids presses on my right side.

I have just seen a consultant with exactly the same symptoms, worriedkat. I had a mammogram, breast ultrasound and a needle biopsy Shock. All results negative.

He said it was just granular tissue in my breast, and has recommended starflower oil, not primrose oil. Maybe the active ingredient is the same - GLA?

The weird thing is, I was very tender after all the tests and poking around, but the next day the pain had gone completely and has so far not come back apart from one brief sharp pain that went in a minute or so. I wonder whether the granulations were actually 'massaged' out by all the pressure - like when you roll a tennis ball over an aching muscle to get rid of the lactic acid.

confusedwwyd · 23/11/2013 17:45

I had this. It went away more or less as soon as I started wearing larger bra and it had not come back.

PeriPathetic · 23/11/2013 17:53

Mine too! I was diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease a few years ago. The pain comes and goes. Been told to avoid coffee and stress. And was given agnus castus for a while but it didn't do much for me.

Worriedkat · 23/11/2013 18:14

Right I'll get some starflower oil vitamins. Looked up duct ecplasia, yep it could be that.

I also have pains on and off under upper arm and in arm pit. Still, that's not changed since 18 months ago.

Did you find it worse in one breast than the other?

Stressful isn't it. Still have that nagging doubt that it could turn nasty Sad

I wonder if some of the milk ducts are slightly damaged, could even have scar tissue, so they feel a bit sore at times due to that.

SpottyDottie · 26/11/2013 22:06

I had really painful boobs in my twenties, so much so that I couldn't hug anyone without wincing! Sometimes it would be just the one boob. I'm now in my 40s and don't get the pain at all. The doctor called it cyclical breast pain.

Worriedkat · 30/11/2013 16:27

Having a paranoia moment today. There's a small slightly pink area to the left of the nipple. But no lump that I can feel. It's almost like mastitis but am not breast feeding.

I suppose it could just be where my bra is though? The pains occur all over the breast, sometimes one side, sometimes the other, sometimes on top, nipple, near armpit, there is no pattern. Anyone know if bc pain is localised near a lump or can it be more diffuse?
