Sciatic-type pain - nothing seems to be working

Hi. Just hoping a few suggestions.
I've had sciatic-type nerve pain in my buttock and leg for well over 6 months now. It hurts when I walk around, I can't run any more, I can't lie on my back at all. It it not totally limiting as I can still cycle, swim etc but it is really starting to get me down that it has been going on so long now and I'm usually a very sporty person.
I've been seeing a chiropractor for about 8 weeks now and although there are some slight improvements to my lower back generally, it hasn't touched the pain.
I tried stopping exercise - no difference. Started again - no difference.
I've been doing various stretching and strengthening exercises that have been recommended and massaging the sore bits by rolling on a golf ball. Still no difference.
I've had pain killers from the doctor but the paracetamol didn't do anything and the codeine made me ill so I stopped taking it. He said if it is still bad in 3 months I can have an MRI scan.
Getting to the end of my tether now and wondering if I should stop with the chiropractor and try a different sort of treatment such as a sports physio?
I know that the problem with this type of pain is that it depends what is actually causing it and that can me a lot of different things. Just wondering what anyone else found effective or at least a bit helpful?

If it has been going on for so long uyou need to find out what is causing it. I had a disc problem which I struggled with for months. Eventually saw neuro consultant - MRI to confirm disc & then had microdiscectomy surgery which was great & sorted problem.
