A friend of mine has just found out her acute backache is in fact a slipped disc. She is having the operation done privately next week. She's been told recovery takes 6 weeks. Does nay one know what she'll be like after the operation? She has young children and is worried about being able to ift them out of cots and highchairs etc. TIA

Do I get a prize if I've come up with a topic that no one on Mumsnet has any experience of?

have a suspected prolapsed disc which has been treated by an osteopath and with serious pilates - has made a huge difference, because having an operation was not an option for me - but from what I remember researching is that some flexibility might be lost - best to talk it through completely with the dr and maybe get a second opinion -

thanks for the reply. She has had the operation now and has been told she can't pick up the children for 4 weeks (!) or drive for 4 weeks. She's in loads of pain and the painkillers make her feel sick

Poor thing - sounds very unpleasant - hope the operation is successful.
