Just found painful lump on breast, pls can anyone advise?

Hi, I'd vaguely noticed some pain in my right breast but when I had my evening shower 10 mins ago I found that the pain is where there is a reddish swelling, just on the right-hand underside of my nipple on my right breast. I'm really worried and will go to the walk-in surgery in the morning, but is there anyone who can reassure me in the meantime? I feel quite sick and would be so grateful for some advice.

Could you have bumped your breast on something earlier today? That would be my first thought.

You will do right to get it looked at by the walk in centre. Let them look at it and decide the next steps from what they find.

Try not to worry yet as there are so many things this could be that are perfectly innocent and treatable at home.

If the area appears irritated, ie red it is unlikely to be anything sinister. I would have it looked at as it needs treating, ingrown hair, infection, etc! Try not to worry

Thanks for your quick reply. I don't know. I don't remember knocking it. Tbh, I don't mean to sound odd but I'm so flat-chested that they don't really get knocked, and this is quite a prominent from the underside aching swelling. It feels hot to the touch. I'm desperate to hear that it's something harmless, but to me right now it looks and feels bad.

Oh really spongebob? It is clearly red. But it goes beyond the nipple/follicle area.

I had something very similar a few years ago. Does it feel warm around the lump? I went to my GP, who told me that as it was painful and warm it was most unlikely to be cancerous. She thought it was probably an infection in the breast tissue and gave me antibiotics, which sorted it out very quickly.
She also booked me in for a scan, just to be sure, which showed everything to be perfectly fine.

Oh thiscoukd, that is very reassuring. Thank you. The nhs website describes redness and 'sunken in appearance' as being a symptom, and mine certainly are, although that part is both of them.

It does feel distinctly warm, yes.

Hi, I do know how scary this is as I have a benign cyst in my left breast. I was scared stiff when I found it and while waiting for a diagnosis but was very lucky as our HA were piloting a quick response project and I was seen at the hospital in 2 days.
I have had an infection in the tissue recently which responded to antibiotics but has needed a longer course to fully disappear. like yours, mine was tender and hot.

You are doing the right thing, I ask that you get the reassurance you need tomorrow

Thanks earthy, I'm glad yours was benign and that it responded to antibiotics in the end. It is quite scary how quickly I've become totally terrified of what it might be. I'm 32 and according to the nhs am not in any risk factor groups, but I'm scared to bits. Lucky that yours was seen so quickly. X

Pain and hot is definitely an indication of infection - not cancer.
Hope you get answers at the walk-in centre. It may be something that your body will cure from its own immune system or you may need Antibiotics.
