Lost my sense of smell and taste

Miserable. Lost my sense of smell and now my sense of taste. I feel utterly fed up as I love to cook (and eat), and food is now just bland.

I've noticed for about the last five to six weeks a strange acrid smell in my nose. I thought it was our new puppy (we've had dogs before), but now my sense of smell has vanished. Anyone else had a similar issue or knows anything about it? Going to book a GP appt next week.

Yes, do. Your GP should definitely take this seriously and investigate thoroughly. Do you have any history of nasal or sinus problems? Or any other relevant medical history?

This definitely warrants careful investigation. Do make that appointment and push for answers.

No other relevant history. I know that there is a link to Alzheimer's but other than age related dementia there isn't any familial history of it. I am quite worried about this. Thanks. Smile

The main thing is to go to get this sorted. Alzheimer's is the far end of the spectrum. Just make sure your GP takes you very seriously.

Best wishes.

Oh I agree Mathilda. I am not worrying per se about Alzheimer's, just more about my inability to smell anything. But thank you.

I had this and my boss had me nearly convinced I was pregnant. It was a sinus infection. Was odd that I never felt ill.

SallyBear · 19/10/2013 21:37

Fingers crossed that's what it is. I have felt a bit dizzy a few times over the last few days. Sort of like when you've had one glass of wine too many Grin

That makes it sound even more like a sinus infection.

Have you lost conciousness at all recently or received a knock or blow to your head?

I only ask because after I had an blow to the head I had concussion for quite some time (weeks). Everytime I saw a Dr (GP and hospital) they asked about loss/change of sense of taste and smell. No idea why tbh but the fact they kept asking me this and asking to clarify my NO answer makes me think that perhaps a head knock may cause this.

Please go and see your GP asap and get checked over.

My totally medically minded self is wondering if it may all be connected to an inner ear problem/infection??? Mouth, nose and ears are all connected and dizziness/balance issues can be connected to the inner ear.

*UNmedically minded self.

Why wait until next week?
