I'm sure I never used to get this pre-pregnancy. But since dd was born 4 years ago it seems to have got worse. I feel like an old lady. My left foot looks very swollen but mostly they just ache ...

Anybody else get this or have a 'cure'?

But why does it happen? Is it circulation?

I don't know what causes it, but if physical activity helps to reduce it, I imagine that it may well be to do with the fact that we have fluid between and within our tissues that is not in blood vessels. If I'm not mistaken this fluid drains into the lymphatic system, which is not pumped like the blood circulation but depends on muscular action to move it along.

Women who have had mastectomy often find that the arm on the same side tends to get very puffy with fluid, and needs to be massaged towards the heart to drain the fluid. This is because breast tissue is lymphatic tissue, and the operation removes the lymphatic tissue and disrupts the lymphatic drainage from the arm.

That doesn't sound right, imaginaryfriend. Is the sensation in them different from normal? I wonder whether you sought to take your toes to the GP, if this strange colour continues.

imaginaryfriend · 09/07/2006 12:50

The weird colour does seem to have gone with the cooler weather today. But I will visit the GP. What happens with your feet pc?

They don't change colour!

For the last few days I've been wearing trainers instead of my usual Birkenstocks, and I've bought myself some trainer-socks (the sort that only go up to the edge of the trainer, nothing around the leg itself). My feet are now back to normal, and there's just a bit of puffiness round my ankles.

And they feel normal. Such a relief!

But I hate wearing shoes all the time, get so sweaty - I miss my Birkenstocks.

Mine didn't totally change colour, more the toes went purplish reddish colour. They're much less swollen today again but still very painful.
