The top of my right boob was a bit sore Weds night and when I rubbed it I felt a sort of lump. Not round, but something there. Decided not to waste any time worrying and got an appt next afternoon with my GP. She isn't sure what it is, said it isn't a typical lump and if I was 21 she wouldn't refer me but just watch and wait, but as I'm 44 she's going to refer me to the Breast clinic. I'll have a mammogram and maybe other tests.

I'm going from being completely freaked out by it to being OK. My plan is to keep busy so I don't think about it.

oh hun, for you

I had the same thing happen to me and it was deemed a harmless fluid filled thingy
I'm sure it'll be fine

take care

SSSandy · 02/07/2006 19:31

Don't be freaked out if you can possibly avoid it. I've had mammograms for years but nothing out of the ordinary ever comes. The lump I have is apparently a milk duct. I have to get them because my mother had breast cancer and after years of thinking everything was ok again, she died of it last year. It was a horrible death too so better safe than sorry. Really. If anything is there, be glad it was detected on time.

Good luck!

SSSandy · 02/07/2006 19:32

comes up I meant to say..

Surfermum · 02/07/2006 19:36

Thank you, both of you. I'm so sorry about your mum SSS. The doc did say that even if it did turn out to be cancerous it's been detected before it's become a lump. It's just hard not to let my mind run riot.

Oh my Surfer mate - so sorry to read this. How long do they think you will have to wait for the mammogram?
Keeping everything crossed for you - it's going to be tricky holding my glass of wine
You know where I am if you need a shoulder to lean on. Let me know if you need dd looked after for any of your appointments. xxx

Surfermum · 02/07/2006 20:47

Thanks Sparkler. I should be seen within 2 weeks, she said probably quicker. Of course the medical secretary in me immediately thought "OMG it's THAT urgent" until she added "and that's for routine referrals too".

Cor, that's a relief I've managed to find something to laugh at. I thought my normal coping mechanism was failing for a minute!

But seriously, I wouldn't honestly expect you to put down your glass of wine to cross your fingers for me. I know we're good pals but I do realise there's a limit.

LOL! Don't worry I can cross my fingers - no chance of me spilling a drop!!!!
It's only natural to think the worst when you work in medical environment. I've had cramp in my leg all day and I keep thinking I've got a blood clot! FFS!!!

Oh Bugger I spilt my wine.........[grr]

Sparkler how do you manage it.?

Surfermum · 02/07/2006 21:07

Thanks, ummmm what do I call you? Sherlock? LGJ? Anyway thanks.

And thanks for the link Evesmama. I don't like to hear of others in the same boat, but it'll be good to talk to others who'll probably be feeling like I do.

Isn't it funny, you read 80% of lumps are entirely benign but all you seem to think is "yes, but 20% aren't".

sparkler1wantsaconservatory · 02/07/2006 21:23

Pratice my dear Sherlock, plenty of practice

TinyGang · 02/07/2006 21:36

Sorry to hear you're so worried SurferMum - really, really hope you're ok. There have been loads of similar posts on mn in the past that've turned out ok. Try not to worry too much.

Surfermum · 04/07/2006 19:25

Thank you TinyGang. Had a bad day yesterday, but I think I was really tired and that affected my mood. Felt much better about it all today, so going to make sure I get lots of early nights.

I had a similar scare last year. It was fine. Just remember - painful is a good sign! Fingers crossed for you.

Surfermum · 04/07/2006 19:37

Thanks Becky. Painful is a good sign is it? Good! I only noticed it because dd had been climbing on me and my boob was painful. I've not gone looking anything up about it - made that mistake when I miscarried. You end up googling it and freak yourself out and it makes the worrying worse!

OP posts:
poisson · 04/07/2006 19:38

surfy! hope it all resolves itself ok

Surfermum · 04/07/2006 19:45

Merci poisson. I'm guessing that's you Cod.

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 19:47

Absolutely. Just sit out the wait! I also first noticed it because it was sore, and I was definitely told by the breast care nurse that painful less likely to be anything sinister. Although, of course, always get it checked. I didn't have a mammogram, but I did have an ultrasound. A medical student was in there, trying really hard not to look disappointed that they hadn't found a tumour. It was a slow dat in the nreast unit obviously!

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 19:48

slow day in the breast unit - what's happening to me?

sparkler1wantsaconservatory · 04/07/2006 23:33

Surfermum please feel free to call me and come and see me if you want to chat, you know where I am. Please don't feel sad by yourself.
I shall give you a call. xxxxxxxx

keyboard · 05/07/2006 00:53

A few years ago I found a lump in my breast and went straight to the doctor who referred me to a specialist. Got seen six weeks later, but by then the lump had disappeared and I was given the all clear. Hope everything turns out fine for you too.

Surfermum · 05/07/2006 16:52

Thank you Sparkler. You're a good friend. How's the job going? Have you started barking "is it urgent? we have no appointments until Christmas" yet?!

Thanks too keyboard. It does help hearing all these stories about people who had lumps that turned out to be nothing. It strikes me that it's a bit like having a miscarriage, and it's only when you've had one that realise how many others have too.

I had a lump when I was 19, I went to the breast clinic and they did an ultrasound on it and took a biopsy. I had it removed in a day surgery thing and it was fine, they can be uncomfortable tho. My Mum had one at the same age as did my auntie and they were both fine. Mum now has cysts which can be drained as apparently they don't remove them. Good luck.
